It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

I do not at foreclose the possibility of various sorts of political shenanigans even after Vucic’s concession but this extraordinary result in Serbia is what happens when people show up: in the streets, at the ballot box. That’s the lesson. If you care about democracy, show up.

If you call a snap election 2 years early, your stated reason is you want Conservatives to get out of your way, your main campaign message to voters is that Cons would be worse, your message to Green supporters is they should not deny you seats that you think are rightfully yours...

looks like this BC election had the most dismal turnout in provincial history — preliminary results are around 48%, compared to the last low of 54% in 2020. elections.bc.ca/resources/re...

Google was really trying to hide its water use figures, to the degree that it got the council to try to keep its water use figures secret. The community finally got the actual numbers and found out Google was using 29 percent of the water in the community. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

Short thread asking @nytimes.com and other MSM to stop interviewing the same small handful of people every time something math-related comes up. Mathematicians are dismayed when AI scoops them on the results? How about look for advice from someone familiar with getting scooped and outpowered.

Terence Tao is typically described as one of the world’s greatest living mathematicians. He is on the front lines of a debate about artificial intelligence and the future of his field.

They find something they care about, and work on that in the little time they have, and teach a new generation of mathematicians in the process. Why don't you interview them about how they do it and why they have not given up on the profession and why they don't break down and cry about it.

No, the work they do is not necessarily the same as the work of the small number of people you always quote. That's the point. It's not mathematics itself that's threatened. It's a certain way of doing it. You could try to look beyond that.

Talk to someone at a small non-flagship state university, with a 3-3 or 4-4 teaching load, who still - somehow - maintains a research program. They are grossly outpowered by R1 professors with large grants and low teaching load. And yet, they manage.

This. If you stop thinking about math as a competition where one person's win is everyone else's loss, then the AI situation looks very different. As does the entire discipline.

OT I wish we had more room in our media for people not approaching maths like athletes, but like writers, or architects, or painters. My corner of maths had so many painters when it started.

This is the part that feels like going insane daily. "lol oh no we can't stop our product from doing crimes aren't we cheeky?" FUCKING JAIL FOR THE CEO THEN

Micah@rincewind.run

if your agents are going to commit crimes, you are legally responsible if you cannot figure out how to prevent your agents from doing crimes, you’re going to have to choose between releasing them and protecting yourself from criminal liability imo this would do more for “ai safety” than a sex cult

Many congratulations to Anne Carson for the well-deserved Nobel Prize! This is also great news for Translation, Classics, Poetry, the breaking of generic and disciplinary boundaries, and the fact that you don't have to fit a pre-existing mould to have a brilliant, successful career.

Actually, AI output is to human work as a bland who-knows-what's-in-it burger is to delicious spicy Creole food.

BAIER: The president says 'SI.' Are you into SI or AI? BEZOS: I do like SI, because 'artificial' is not a very flattering thing. Like, nobody wants an artificial sweetener, artificial flavoring.

The Muse ads I've seen promise that Muse will "take things off my hands" so that I can save time. For example, it can save me time by turning my profile photo into a crayon drawing. Really important stuff that will help me with my many responsibilities.

again, really hope working mathematicians put the pieces together and realize the fundamental threat from ai companies has little to do with transforming practices or modes of mentorship. they want a death grip on funding and employment in the discipline. it's what they want with everything

noetherian induction sarah@scgriffith.bsky.social

killing me seeing mathematicians respond to the ai situation by talking about its effect on lines of inquiry or mentorship, & refusing to acknowledge all this hinges on redefining how money and power operate in mathematics. not my place to tell them what to do, but i naively expected something more

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

It feels like journals are only a filter for baseline quality, there really is a niche out there for people to personally curate reading lists for others. There is a cottage industry for this in other content like movies, so it would be cool for an academic to get paid to specialize in this way

Given that I know very little about Canadian politics, how likely is that the right wing nut jobs get their wet dream of being Trumpfuckistan ver 2? Or that they will get their referendum at all?

If you use AI to do your research, you really cannot complain when reviewers use AI to review your papers, imo. The processes you use to expedite your workflow create more work for the rest of us, who are under the same constraints to maximize our own output. Plus, peer review is invisible labor.

We need to do some soul-searching to figure out how to make that adjustment in mathematics. But it needs to be done.

Also, there's no fucking need to produce art faster. It's not food. If an animated movie, or a book, or a music album takes five years to make, then so be it. "We need to make it faster" is a capitalistic mindset, and it's there to benefit the owners of corporations, not the workers/customers.
