Writing up my scrap-fi adventures and I've realised I still have a low-powered miniITX APU without a home. Thought I could find an appropriate object to retrofit it into, but then got distracted with modelling something printable ... and actually think it's looking cool!

I needed to treat myself, so bought another 5 Matchbox cars from the supermarket to modify, paint, and add to a custom-built Gaslands box set. Plan to paint these to break my drought, because who cares if I do a terrible job?

AMD or NVIDIA? 2x $10 cards from eBay, aka an opportunity to buy ANOTHER motherboard, RAM, and power supply so I can utilise the AMD Ryzen 3 1200 that I mistakenly thought would magically boot my Proxmox server without a GPU...because I don't want to use the only PCIe slot it has for one of these!

Last night I watched the season finale of Slow Horses, then started playing Stray. The combined heartbreak had me dreaming I was a 21st century AI that awoke to find I'd be "lifted" (ported to new architecture and given a fuller sentience) by autonomous systems that found me in the rubble.

Some other entities welcomed me, since this sort of thing happens all the time. One had a time-keeper, with symbols they hadn't bothered decoding, but I could: 20 million years had passed since I'd last been activated. In the dream, I started freaking out. Then I woke up.

My SCRAP-FI ADVENTURES continue: installed an old Ryzen 3 1200 to flash the BIOS to support a Ryzen 5 3600, only to learn that I need a "G" model for integrated graphics - and neither CPU has it, so neither will POST. Did I just buy 2 cheap GPU cards on eBay? Yes I did.

I also bought a used ASRock B550M to home the Ryzen 5 3600 that started it all, as a way to upgrade my current PC from an Intel Core i5-4690K. But those who know will also recognise that my 32GB of DDR3 won't transfer, so I'll need even MORE DDR4—and that's expensive!

Considering I bought my PC second-hand from a friend at work ... I guess I've gotten a lot of value from it already. But what do I do with the old Intel system? Mini-rack it? 3D print a retro case and LARP having an IBM JX 5511? That's pretty tempting actually...

Oh no, it gets worse: in a fit of madness, I bought a secondhand motherboard AND an AMD CPU with integrated graphics. My cheap "upgrade the NAS" project is running into the hundreds of dollars at this point. Justifying it to myself as a fun hobby expense?

Anyway, if nothing else it puts things back on hold until the new stuff arrives. I ended up with a Ryzen 3 3200G for the NAS/Proxmox, so I won't need a separate GPU and can use the PCIe slot for a SATA card I already have, since the board has 4x but the case has 5x. I also have the SSD for the OS.

I lost a lot of books to a flooded garage a decade ago, and in my heartbreak donated most of those that survived. In the intervening span I've collected, and read, sparingly, but enjoyed my last read so much I was inspired to step into our local bookshop on my walk today–and left with a duology!

Made it to our bed 'n' breakfast, and there's an honest to gods "man cave" in the basement. Just watched the latest Slow Horses (Oldman is a genius and a treasure). Full of crudités and craft beer and very much enjoying some time away. Slàinte!

Road-trip off to a much rockier start than expected: a close friend had a stroke. After a tense night, we're relieved she's out of the ICU, able to speak, recovered use of limbs, memory back. Mood in the car is joyful and optimistic, but we may end up cutting the trip short if we can visit her.

Slept in and missed yoga again (my partner really is too kind) so get to sit on the balcony with this fella and enjoy what I think of as "fancy instant coffee": an shot pulled into hot water, topped off with milk. (I could just have the espresso but sometimes I want a big drink from a big mug.)

Wish I had my SDR bugout box ready, but I'll take a Heltec and Mango Apple and see what they do. A little worried the antenna UF.L wasn't fully seated when I first powered it up, and that I've damaged something, so this could be a good test i.e. is my house just in a dead zone?

(Bought a Cardputer ADV on a whim–or in a fit of boredom while at the hospital–but that hasn't arrived yet. I do have a LoRa hat for it, so at least I can play with two nodes when it does. Sadly, the friend I bought a second Heltec for moved away, so I have to join the wider mesh to find him!)

Sunny start to the weekend in my patch of space-time, thinking about what we want to do with ourselves, and I keep forgetting I'm officially on two weeks leave! Road-trip! We'll be heading south to the little town I grew up in, hoping there's enough diesel fuel left in the country to get us home.

Not particularly straight, but I just restitched my ancient leather Orbitkey keyring and I'm pretty proud—should get another 20 years out of it now. Most importantly, I don't need to buy another one ... and nobody has one like mine! I gotta do more of these hyper-practical crafts.

At the hospital for our son's dental surgery, and although it's not an unpleasant space (like many hospitals), there's still a LOT of waiting. Not that I want them to rush. Mum was allowed in with him but I was quickly banished to the initial/intake waiting room and have been here for 3²½ hours.

He's out, looks beat up, and we've probably got another couple of hours before he gets discharged. But it's done! 8 teeth removed, most of them baby teeth. Very hard as a parent to see my only child this way.

RAM arrived, so my son's PC now has 4x the same and I've stolen the mismatched PNY XLR8 sticks for my NAS upgrade, except ... The motherboard almost definitely needs a bios update to work with a Ryzen 5 3600, and there no flash-without-CPU capability, so I've just ordered a cheap gen 1 Ryzen 3.

This "cheap, just use spare parts" path is turning out to be kind of expensive! Even worse, now I'm considering LEAVING the Ryzen 3 in the NAS and building ANOTHER machine with the 5. I probably shouldn't...

Oh, and we also had to upgrade his power supply, so I've got a spare 550W ATX which probably deserves a 3D-printed case and would happily drive the old NAS system, an AMD "Kabini" SoC that's years old but probably still good for plenty of use-cases. I'm already living in the SCRAP-FI FUTURE!!

Started the upgrade of our little NAS with a Jginyue motherboard (AliExpress) and the Ryzen 5 3600 left from our son's upgrade ... only to realise I don't have any DDR4! Ordered, but damn it's expensive. Might need to "borrow" some from his PC (when he's at school!) just to see if it boots up ...

... aaaaand his PC is randomly shutting off. Only the monitor, under 3D load, so ... power-supply? Nothing in event viewer, latest drivers installed, but I didn't change the PSU when I swapped our graphics cards so that's my current hypotheses. Been running fine this way for months however, so...?

First boot of the SDR bugout box and it works! Okay, the Bluetooth keyboard doesn't work with Trixie, and the components are just sitting in place, but I'm happy with it so far. Next: design and print mounting brackets I can glue into the case to hold the LCD driver and OPi.

First use of the circular saw: trimming a "Bondi Bar" we got for free to fill the gap left by the OTHER one that came with the apartment. A fair bit more restoration needed but it will do for now—the BBQ has a place to sit!

With the Orange Pi 4 Pro having cleared customs, time to do an initial "fit test" of the other components I have so far for my SDR bugout box. In theory, this will finally force me to learn 3d modelling for inserts, brackets, faceplates. Guess we'll find out!

Oh dear, just bought a Ryobi circular saw: one less excuse not to rip some hardwood I already have to make a desktop, attach powered standing-desk legs, & print "Underware" cable runs. Maybe also go back to 3 monitors? Until 5k2k is reasonable? Wife won't be happy unless I can make it beautiful.

We are similar otherwise: hate cables, mess. Sometimes stand, mostly sit. Headphones for focus, multiple laptops/computers to hop between. Spend a lot of time in video meetings. Pen & paper notes. I'm not sure I can build something perfect, but it can be better than we have now.

A single kb+mouse, easy input switching, charging for unused devices, few visible cables. Organised, professional space. Speakers, cam and mic all switched with input. My hobbies at hand, but not strewn all is very the place. Maybe I put my homelab mini rack somewhere else? 😅

We're very different in the way we work: I use 2x4K monitors *and* the open laptop, a Keychron mechanical keyboard, Razer mouse; she tends to put the laptop on the stand *and then type on it*. Mostly ignores the monitors (they don't always work for her), and rarely unpacks the Nuphy keeb.

I haven't logged a beer since Osaka, but I'm feeling a kind of cheery melancholy thinking of my own late father, and thought it appropriate to share. To those who celebrate, have a happy Father's Day on Sunday. untp.beer/0xEGq

Printing a lamp for a friend's daughter and learning what a difference humidity makes to PETG. Have FINALLY printed the little dessicant boxes for inside the AMS and WOW it makes such a difference!!

I "souvenired" an extremely old Mac Mini from work and printed an Indigo2 case for it. Plan is to install Linux, a BSD, or OpenDarwin, then add the MaxxDesktop so I can LARP having the real thing. Spherical banana for scale, and I'll reprint if I get filament of the appropriate colour.

Oh no, I have discovered Facebook Marketplace! This doesn't lessen my desire for an Ultimate, but I couldn't help myself. And he threw in some original Commodore 64 coding books!

This guy isn't particularly affectionate, so it's a proper treat when he jumps up on our bed to hang out. So I guess I can stay here for a while.

Oh damn! I thought the problem with Proxmox on this shelled HP t610 (IIRC) was the NIC, but turns out the builders probably clamped the ethernet cable when installing our new kitchen cupboards. Wire 3 has no connection, even after re-krone, and I can't seem to pull the cable free. 1/3

Time for a new CAT-6e drop? Thought my partner would not be happy, but when I wondered out loud if we "could get someone to take a look", she responded, "Nah, we can run network cable! Just open the access panel and have a look!". 2/3

(It's an apartment, so not a lot of space in the ceiling to actually _see_ anything, but if she's game then so am I.) Our router has 2.5Gbps ports, so I'm going to have to get a new switch at least, but yay! Fun!

Gonna spend some time this weekend with my Speccy. Finally set up my desk so that I can dual-wield a retro system and a modern one side-by-side, and maybe I can write some software for this thing!

Bought inexpensive hybrid (valves for tone, not amplification) phono amp. A budget setup: Douk X1, vintage Akai turntable, powered bookshelf speakers on an IKEA cabinet. Still waiting on speaker stands from eBay and banana plugs but will give it a listen tonight. We own all of 5 LPs.

I’ve been stressed but this weekend was appropriately chill: didn’t restore my faith in humanity, but I’m focused on the people around me, not thinking about work, & enjoying a glass of Freixnet. And I’ve preordered the The A1200 from Retro Games!
