A masterclass by @davidjbier.bsky.social on how to maintain your composure and principles in the face of people unable to do either. We don't need to yell or mock because the facts, the law, and common decency are on our side, as David made apparent before someone unfit to hold the seat he's in.

KENNEDY: You said, 'Republicans think can troll their way to ethnic cleansing.' Did I read that correctly? BIER: DHS tweeted for 100m deportations. That would be ethnic cleansing! K: You don't think it's hyperbolic? B: I think advocating 100m deportations is ethnic cleansing. Yes. Your time is up

craft, reflection, wonder, and the capacity to speak of both light and shadow with grace. Words that are beautiful, useful, or true don’t disappear overnight. They don’t age out with the latest social feed. They persist, as Lewis Lapham wrote,

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue

This is all we need to know about it:

The new National Security Strategy is a propaganda document, designed to be widely read. It is also a performative suicide. Hard to think of another great power ever abdicating its influence so quickly and so publicly. It will be worth following the reactions around the world, not just in Europe.

Who could it be?

“We’re going to continue to find out if there’s anybody responsible,” Blanche said, “anybody that hasn’t already been held accountable and if they’re out there we’ll find them.” Except for my client and boss, of course.

And here we are…

Graduate seminar did a deep dive on Thomas Paine’s Common Sense yesterday. At the line, “in America the law is king,” they (14 students from 6 countries) burst out laughing. I've been doing this for 35 years and this is the first time that was a laugh line.

If these “Seven Social Sins” were meant as a warning 100 years ago, our century seems intent on treating them as a to-do list. This week’s essay (out on Wednesday!) explores how each item on this list plays out in our current culture of excess and distraction. www.timelesstimely.com

House Speaker Mike Johnson insisted Tuesday that he would not swear in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva until Democrats relent and end the government shutdown. Grijalva, speaking alongside Democrats, including Sen. Mark Kelly, on Wednesday, said the delay “is not procedural. It’s intentional.” 🧵

Not surprising, but still shocking.

I seem to recall that it was the biggest 1st Amendment attack in American history when the Biden admin alerted social media companies to some content and said "hey does this violate your policies?" Will Matt Taibbi, Michael Shellenberger and (lol) CBS News Editor in Chief Bari Weiss call this out?

If you rename the Department of Defense the Department of War, then bomb fishing boats in the Caribbean, and shoot an unarmed priest in the head with a pepper bullet, you should automatically be barred from receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for the rest of your life.

Hilarious. The fire alarm is going off at Fenway and the organist accompanies it with a live composition.
