Account seems back, but no word from Meta on why. Smart move by @indivisible.org to build on Bluesky, Mastodon, & direct newsletters instead of relying on Big Tech's whims. Meta needs to explain exactly what the hell happened on such a critical day. #Meta #NoKings

Ezra Levin ❌👑@ezralevin.bsky.social

❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this. Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.

Loved being guest host with @masnick.com on @ctrlaltspeech. No shortage of things to talk about especially with Reddit killing off RSS, publishers being scraped to death by bots, 11th circuit upholding Florida's age ban and TikTok's CEO just saying no to ad moderation. What could possibly go wrong?

Reddit kills off RSS feeds, TikTok opens the floodgates for scam ads, misinformation spreads about how misinformation spreads, and more this week on Ctrl-Alt-Speech. Episode 125: No Good Feed Goes Unpunished, with guest host @mmccue.bsky.social, out now! podcast.ctrlaltspeech.com/2315966/epis...

niemanlab.orgMeta’s new commercial terms will allow the scraping of news sites, legal experts say | Nieman Journalism LabMeta can use web scrapers to crawl and collect content from websites “associated with” business accounts on its platforms, according to its new commercial terms of use.
The update, set to go into effect on October 30, will include news publishers with business accounts. These accounts allow companies or public figures to manage Facebook pages, Messenger accounts, Instagram profiles, or WhatsApp channels from one place. While journalism isn’t the only industry that will be affected by this update, virtually every news organization has at least one Meta business account, including Nieman Lab.
The new terms broadly cover business accounts that manage pages and groups, run advertisements, push marketing messages, and use the platform’s business account dashboard. As written, the new terms could be used to argue that Meta can scrape content from news sites and use that content to train the company’s AI products, according to three legal experts who reviewed the terms at Nieman Lab’s request.
“This is a remarkable provision to bury in [the] terms of service, given that this would give Meta access to material that would likely cost many millions of dollars in a licensing market,” said Matt Topic, a media and intellectual property attorney at Loevy & Loevy. “It’s not clear whether a court would enforce this, but publishers should assume that it would be enforceable.”
In early October, Meta alerted users to the update in a blog post and on the Meta Business Suite. The updated terms explicitly state that Meta can use the content it collects from associated websites to “train” Meta products. Elsewhere in its terms of service, the company defines “AI at Meta” as one of those products.
Here’s the new language about scraping in full:
You authorize us (or any entity acting on our behalf) to use automated software (such as web scrapers, bots, robots, spiders, crawlers, and user agents) and create test credentials to access, index, cache, analyze, collect, retrieve, or crawl the domains, web pages, or URLs (and any content available through them) that are associated with your products or services, or that are made available through your or users’ use of Meta Company Products and services, and to periodically pull updates from such domains, web pages, or URLs. Meta may use any content from such domains, web pages, or URLs to provide, develop, improve, research, train, and maintain the integrity of, the Meta Company Products, services, and features provided under these Commercial …

Rewatched this tonight. Highly recommended. This Decoder episode stands as one of the most prescient takes form @reckless.bsky.social on the future of the web and AI

@reckless.bsky.social has described this as the "door dash problem." I still feel the monopoly of Google/Amazon/Apple will be big enough to bully any other business into relenting into their systems. www.theverge.com/podcast/8239...

theverge.comThe DoorDash problem and the great AI browser fightAmazon sued Perplexity this month over its Comet browser, which uses AI agents to do online shopping on your behalf. This is the first major front in the war over who gets to browse the web.
Jacob Kramer-Duffield@jaykaydee.bsky.social

Very good rundown of the wide gulf between promise and reality for agents. For Muse to really work like Facebook wants, every other company with a digital presence would have to unilaterally surrender and turn over their experience to Zuck; same with any other agent. Idk seems unlikely!

The best way to fight back against the Paramount/Warner Brothers merger is to support independent artists, journalists, writers, filmmakers, musicians and everyone else who has been walking a very hard path to putting things out into the world.

In this episode of Deployed, he sits down with Brad Porter, the founding engineer he once recruited at Tellme, to talk about what it actually takes to ship hard technology across the internet, mobile, and AI eras. They get into the first-principles call that saved Tellme (walking away from a company-defining AT&T check), how to build teams that compound, why he shipped voice AI two decades before the world was ready, and two unforgettable Steve Jobs stories: including the day Jobs picked up an iPad and explained Flipboard's purpose better than Mike could himself. 00:34 Welcome and introducing Mike McCue 01:14 Internet, mobile, and AI: are they really different? 03:58 The art of timing as an entrepreneur 04:50 Building his first robot in 7th grade 06:49 Writing video games and founding his first company 08:55 The vision: bringing the internet to phones via voice 09:47 Building cloud computing and speech recognition before their time 12:41 Tellme's culture check for hiring 14:26 Billion-dollar seed rounds then and now 15:41 Netscape's growth and the economics of tech 17:40 The dot-com crash during fundraising 20:08 Democratizing access to information 22:40 Flipboard's vision: reimagining the web with people in it 27:26 Lessons from mentors Bill Campbell and John Giannandrea 30:25 Making 50/50 decisions as a solo founder 33:46 Meeting Steve Jobs and debating the stylus 36:02 Demoing Flipboard to Steve Jobs 41:16 His wife Marcy's MS diagnosis and remarkable recovery 46:37 Closing thoughts

I ❤️ Graze and Portland

Rick Turoczy@turoczy.co

Portland startup @graze.social has been acquired by @flipboard.com. Worth noting, the company had an unusual — and significant — trajectory for a Portland startup: Going from founding to exit in a matter of months. Nice work @devingaffney.com and crew! siliconflorist.com/2026/08/26/b...

@devingaffney.com and @ngerakines.me have built something very special. I'm really excited to see them continue to advance Graze as the ultimate feed building platform while Surf & Flipboard help millions of new users discover and experience these feeds in new ways that we'll be designing together.

Excited to announce that the Graze team is joining @flipboard.com! We're thrilled to be working with such a stellar team continuing to build the next era of the attention economy. Read more below:

Incredibly excited about this! Will be integrated into surf.social as soon as possible.

There is no way that "278,000 noncitizens" are voting in US elections, as Trump claims in his speech. Its just not physically possible, as WIRED and other outlets have consistently reported. This is a scare tactic, and it's working. And the repercussions are endless:

Listen, I want you all to make a firm commitment. Next time we join an online community we all have to insist it's on the open social web so this can never happen again. We have to stop making the same mistake over and over.

One thing I want to specify about this post — Virginia, the state whose rules were just struck down, is choosing not to appeal the judge’s ruling. So this particular case won’t be escalating to SCOTUS; this is the end of the road for it.

NEW: After the Civil War, Congress readmitted the southern states under a key condition: don't expand felony disenfranchisement. But the states quickly violated their promise & weaponized criminal statutes to skew elections. It finally caught up with one of them this year. Fascinating read:
