blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/27/t... A fun, well-crafted monster movie with terrific practical effects, but one that loses its heart when it shifts from poignant and creepy to gory action

This is quite interesting. I don't know how robust the methodology is but the research strongly suggests that by far the biggest barrier to tax reform is billionaire press owners using their outlets to persuade people it's a bad idea via lies & dodgy stats www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
If you're still looking for horror films to watch this Halloween weekend, I'll be discussing some of my favourites with @evandorkin.bsky.social and @mryellovich.bsky.social on their @tearthemapartpod.bsky.social Livestream tomorrow - 8 PM EDT, midnight GMT youtu.be/LF8EvBJfanw
And I am still posting a horror film review every day over on Blasphemous Tomes. You can also find an archive over around 250 older reviews and a bunch of episodes of The Good Friends of Jackson Elias about horror films there. blasphemoustomes.com/category/oct...

blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/26/f... A serviceable ghost story let down by a plodding pace, somewhat salvaged by its willingness to be nasty. Still, average and forgettable. Based on a book by Peter Straub, although not his finest work.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/25/a... I can't decide whether Angst is exploitative for building on a real murder case. It's refreshing to see a film about a psychopath that makes its subject so unglamorous, however. It's an anti-slasher film, in which the monster is an irredeemable loser.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/24/f... Fréwaka is now the film to beat this month. I loved everything about it. One of the finest folk horror films I've seen and certainly the best portrayal of the dark side of fairy folklore.

What I love about this episode is how every scene they discuss pushes Scott closer to despair, while Eleanor, completely unfazed by his growing exasperation, cheerfully declares yet another of her favorite moments from the movie. It’s fantastic. 😂 #teamMoM
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/20/i... @stardustandsigil.bsky.social joins the Good Friends once again, peering In the Mouth of Madness. Opinions may be divided.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/23/c... Daft, pulpy fun from Mario Bava that borrows heavily from Nigel Kneale. Also, weirdly gory for a fifties monster movie.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/23/t... I keep going back and forth on whether I like this one. It's an ambitious piece of guerrilla filmmaking, but light on plot, messy, and badly paced. An interesting curiosity, if nothing else. Also, the same director as Space Mutiny!

blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/21/v... Man, I love this film. It is just so fucking weird. A talkie that thinks it's a silent film, a script filled with moon logic, and some remarkably artificial performances. Everything is at least a bit off, but the elements come together deliriously.

Unacceptable from anyone organising a con, but from one of the people in charge of the biggestUK event? At what point did he think this was a) good comms strategy? & b) not going to get spread far & wide? Then again, I've always felt that the organisers have utter contempt for traders and attendees
You may appreciate the naked contempt dripping from this email reply @loremistress93.bsky.social. Just a reminder to all UK creatives that UKGE does not give a shit about you or your opinions, and the recent AI stuff is more than just a simple mistake.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/20/t... A subtle but nightmarish tale of portents and inevitability. While I adored this film, I wonder how it will go down with those who didn't grow up with British media of the 1970s.

Escape from New York, the glider scene. It's '81, a year before Tron revolutionised CG and Carpenter has 1/3 of Tron's budget...so how did he pull off an absurdly sophisticated wireframe simulation?! It's actually a cardboard city painted matte black, lined with reflective tape and lit with UV.
We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/19/b... A classic of extreme horror. Not a gory film, but a hard one to watch because of its attitude towards sexual violence. An amazing, uncomfortable psychodrama, with a gripping final act, but I suspect a lot of people will never make it that far for good reason.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/18/u... A very average tale of demonic influence propped up by some imaginative storytelling. Not a film that will stay with me, but still fine I guess. Also one of the most overtly Christian horror films I've seen for a while, although it stops short of evangelising.

blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/17/c... Some great ideas, and the ghost is pretty creepy, but I found the film itself flat and lifeless. It seemed to want to tell two different stories -- a classic urban legend and an exploration of parental abuse -- but couldn't quite make them mesh.

incredibly humbling to have been first through the breach on this. no trans woman had ever had a horror novel at a big five publisher before MANHUNT, which is not to slap myself on the back but to comment on how lonely and scary it was. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

And it's funded now. Someone bought in at the £5k mark (not me, as if I'd have that much). I'm really happy as this is what Kickstarter should be used for, helping bring projects for small companies and individuals to life.

blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/16/j... A dark, gothic fairy tale that defies classification or explanation. After more than 50 years of watching horror films, it excites me when something keeps surprising me from scene to scene. Simply wonderful.
Was it you two who put me onto this, @mryellovich.bsky.social @evandorkin.bsky.social? I have a vague memory that you were planning an episode of @tearthemapartpod.bsky.social about it.
This looks amazing! The interview with Frank Belknap Long about Lovecraft is particularly exciting. Now I need to work out what level I can justify backing. www.kickstarter.com/projects/lov...
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/15/h... Tense, creepy fun, but I would have liked it better if it had been more misanthropic. As fond as I am of horror as metaphor, Hokum felt like it was pulling in two different directions at times.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/14/v... Tedious to begin with, but once it takes off, we get plenty of fun, gruesome body horror. Shades of The Thing and Tomie, but, you know, with clay.

blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/13/s... Send Help was so much fun. Twisty, brutal, and darkly humorous, with some wonderfully shocking moments. And it's a delight to see Raimi making horror again.

blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/12/s... I hadn't heard of this until I saw it in the Arrow catalogue, but comparisons to Man Bites Dog and Creep hooked me. An odd little film, more uncomfortable and blackly humorous than frightening, but clever and imaginative enough to warrant a watch.

blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/11/e... A kung-fu-action-comedy-horror about a cat spirit -- an evil one. If that makes it sound daft, that's only because it is. It's also a hell of a lot of fun. A tonal mishmash, and the fight scenes are tame for a Hong Kong action film, but still highly watchable.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/11/s... I really liked this. It's creepy, vicious, and quite disgusting in places. At the same time, it's a surprisingly sensitive exploration of disordered eating and weight loss. A strong contender for film of the month for far, although it is still early days.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/09/t... While I liked this more than people told me I would, it is a pretty awful horror film. It's a confused mess that does little to shock, scare or sicken. But it's a nice, sleazy snapshot of Bohemian seventies NYC. Fun, but maybe not for the intended reasons.

I witness that too. Things are getting worse.
It’s fucking bleak. Every trans person I know is struggling with finding & keeping work. Trans women especially. Even in “progressive” cities. Every trans peep I know has kofi goals that aren’t being fucking met AT ALL. Some folks I know are on the brink of homelessness. FUCKING HELP TRANS PEOPLE!
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/08/n... A weird Japanese psychological horror. I'm still not sure what I make of this one. It's tense and moody, offering more questions than answers. I'm hesitant to recommend it, as I suspect most people will hate it, but I found it unsettling.
blasphemoustomes.com/2026/10/07/d... A creepy, imaginative tale about the worst kind of imaginary friend. It manages to explore the ambiguity between mental illness and demonic possession without feeling trite or derivative. Even so, it falls short of being great.
