This shows how badly misaligned costs and benefits of energy in Britain are. Here, the cost of burying lines will fall on all GB consumers, not just Wales, so why not respond to local voters? By all means decry the NIMBYism However... (nerdy thread)

Last year, UK gave about £2bn to companies (which aren't HQ'd in Wales incidentally) to *NOT* generate electricity. These payments could well triple by 2030. Right now, there's no market incentive to shift energy-intensive industries to these areas to make use of this 'wasted' electricity.

You can demand Wales pays for this expensive infrastructure, but please demand that we get the benefit of the infrastructure too. Ultimately, we have a highly distorted 'market' where there's next to no connection between cost (financial and other) and benefit, or really supply and demand.

Wales is already a net exporter of electricity. We don't need more - and crucially, we don't benefit as consumers from producing more. Despite being the among the cheapest generators of electricity, we have above-average bills. Northern Scotland is cheapest - and they have the highest bills.

In contrast, London has the cheapest electricity prices - but it's their peak demand needs that triggers firing up the most expensive and carbon-emitting gas generators that sets the market-price.

What a fascinatingly mental idea. Music listeners don’t think like this

If we in Wales want a vibrant cultural scene, the best thing we could do is have cheap rents, by building lots of new housing.

it seems to shock the New Zealand government that Peter Jackson, Taika Waititi, and the Conchords etc all emerged from the same city in the same span, which coincidentally is when Wellington rent was dirt-cheap and there were heaps of empty industrial buildings around

Talk of re-industrialisation in certain sectors like defence is good, but making it the key pillar of your overall economic strategy when services make up 80% of GDP feels like a mistake.

It also ducked all the actually difficult decisions while sounding like it was making them. The fun of muesli and teetotalism with the health benefits of a booze, fags and coke binge.

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

The West helped create Vladimir Putin. A senior Western diplomat warned in 1994 where capitalist 'shock therapy' would take Russia. They ignored him - and ended his diplomatic career.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

Worth a read. I think my eyebrows actually did shoot up

Picked up a copy of "Hyperpolitics" on a whim after seeing it promoted all over the place and I can only conclude that Verso have an amazing marketing department because there's not much substance here and the evidence base is weak.

Pretty weird article in the Economist on (and against) free public transport. Immediately after saying it has no effect on increasing usage, it blames it for causing major increase in delays due to... increased usage. It goes on to say it doesn't help poor people because rich bankers could benefit

The gaps in reading scores between England and Wales are incredibly stark Average reading scores in Wales are lower than for disadvantaged pupils in England The least disadvantaged group in Wales scores below the average for England @theifs.bsky.social @tom-richmond.com @samfr.bsky.social

Reading scores have remained stable in England. But since most other countries have seen scores fall, England is outperforming the OECD average to a greater degree. Across the UK, reading scores are lowest in Wales, with a continued decline since 2018.

They'll be a lot of chatter about England's PISA results this morning, but we need to talk just as much about Wales. They rejected phonics and knowledge-rich curricula in favour of 'areas of learning', 'skills suites' and barely any testing. Wales is now 40 points below England in every domain.

Cofnas is obviously a racist, to the extent that if he isn't one then the term has no meaning. Sacking academics for their views - as opposed to research fraud or personal behaviour - isn't a great move though. It's not akin to being a newspaper columnist or party representative.

It's quite ironic that this "quote" by Darwin is fabricated, and obviously so to anyone who knows anything about Darwin.

Pretty much the best indicator of whether someone will be a terrorist isn't religiosity, ethnicity or ideological fervour. It's whether he has a history of domestic violence.

Ant Middleton's proposal is that it would be necessary to have UK-born grandparents and parents to become eligible for high office. So even the *children* of Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Sadiq Khan, Shabana Mahmood and indeed son of Jewish refugees Ed Milband would be banned from office.
