A useful thing that the OBR might do but which the government probably can’t: a nice long section clarifying the costs of the Iran war on the British economy and public finances.

Pro-Europeans really need to get their act together if they're going to sieze the opportunity which is being presented here. Press and broadcasters reverting right back to their previous position from 2016, with zero update.

Of all the bbc presenters, Webb’s politics are the easiest to read - because he puts them in newspapers and doesn’t even try to hide them in broadcasts His politics are also mind numbingly predictable

This is just the maddest argument. These people would trap us in poverty to keep a decade old commitment, which no one ever actually made, to an electorate which no longer exists.

La Bola Negra is everything you could want from a trip to the cinema: vast, rich, profound, unpredictable, impossibly ambitious and painfully beautiful. It's an all-time classic.

Obviously not everyone agrees. The couple in front of me got up after 20 minutes and never came back. I stared at them like they were creatures from anther planet. Felt like following them into they foyer shouting: IS THIS NOT CINEMA? WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU THINK YOU'D COME HERE TO SEE?

This is utterly damning, and yet still about as generous as possible

What an incredible night last night. To see the resistance against populism triumph in two such different countries, in two such different ways.

I know I say this every time, but it's true. They try to make you believe they are inevitable, when in fact they are defeatable. They do this because once people believe they will always win, there's no point fighting back.

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

I really liked Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. It's patched together from ideas from better films, it's unbelievably on the nose and it's way too long. But it made me laugh a lot and its heart is firmly in the right place. Full of really healthy opposition to mobile phones, AI and advertising.

Vučić’s defeat could mark a geopolitical turning point for Serbia. It could also inject fresh momentum into EU enlargement across the W. Balkans, where progress has stalled for years. A Serbia firmly anchored in Europe would transform the region’s outlook and significantly weaken Russia’s influence

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

Incredible. Student List are candidates selected by groups of students to form an anti-corruption party. Another youth-led movement overthrowing an authoritarian government in Europe.

Despite orders for polls to remain open for an extra two hours, results are already coming in, including from states with the strongest evidence of voter suppression, like Bahia. This will be a long night. What is happening is an unprecedented crime against democracy in Brazil.

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

Again, worth analysing Burnham as if he is really good at politics: moving red lines from things EU can't accept (free movement) to things it might (euro). Changing terms of debate on an issue from negative (uncontrolled immigration) to positive (Brits can go abroad for work).

Mujtaba Rahman@mijrahman.bsky.social

I think @andyburnham.bsky.social wants to rejoin the EU. Not spin. It's incredibly bold to even raise free movement. Perhaps testing the water to see if public opinion on immigration has changed. The Europeans are paying attention

Watching him carefully but deliberately wade into this issue is very encouraging. For over a decade, political leaders have not dared to break the consensus on free movement and without that there can be no meaningful improvement in European relations.

Fascinating Jeremy, now tell us about the time you cut national insurance twice as an electoral game despite knowing we couldn't afford it.

Obviously I want the utmost damage to Trump in the midterms, for Congress to constrain him & for a Democrat president in a couple years time. But honestly something broke in my relationship w America when Trump won the second time. I can't imagine feeling excited for an American president again.

I actually find it quite embarrassing to watch speeches by Obama now, particularly his appeal to American decency. He's right of course. You don't win elections telling voters they're spoiled little shits. But I don't want to hear it

The whole world is having to deal with the terrifying and expensive chaos caused by this country's temper tantrum, and then we have to hear them mytholigise themselves on top of it all. Just can't be fucking dealing with it.

I have given up on making any comments about this "coverage". Asinine, pig-ignorant, moronic, piss-poor, yes, take your pick, but also biased, partisan, misinformation bordering on disinformation. France (and Europe) are a blank screen on which British media can project their own neuroses.

It's going to take a long time to reformat the way industry bodies and commentators approach politics. They don't yet seem to have clocked just how fundamentally devolution is going to change things.

some of the hysteria here seems to ignore the fact that this is *optional*? if it looks like it will damage local tourism, mayors can just... not do it! they can change their minds!

The poisoning of the US rightwing mind long predates Trump. But now, under Trump, we are seeing the logical conclusion of politics built entirely on a lack of shame or any aversion to lies. Even promoting the rapists of children, and their defenders, is now deemed acceptable political territory.

I try to avoid American domestic news. But when I go see it, it's always some new threshold of cruelty or stupidity.
