RIP, Walter Koenig.

Jesse Thorn@jessethorn.bsky.social

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

It remains astonishing to me that James Dolan was able to stay out of the way *just* long enough for the Knicks to end a 53-year championship drought. Everything he's done from the second the team won seems like he's determined to remind you what a colossal asshole he is.

this is fucking appalling. i already knew james dolan (who owns the knicks and madison square garden) was a douche but this is next-level. www.nytimes.com/athletic/771...

I mostly let the writers air their Studio 60 grievances, but I must mention two things: 1. Jenna Fischer hosted an ep, and Sorkin never thought to put her and Lucy Davis in a scene together. 2. Lauren Graham hosted another ep, and she didn't get any chance to deliver rat-a-tat Sorkin dialogue.

Aaron Sorkin's infamous Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip debuted 20 years ago this fall. I talked with a group of contemporary comedy writers about why the show didn't work, but also why they're still obsessed with it:

Much credit/blame for this piece has to go to @timcarvell.bsky.social, whose post inspired it.

Consider this an alert to outlets that cover entertainment: The 20th anniversary of “Studio 60” is coming up in September and every comedy writer on earth will talk to you about their continued horrified fascination with it.

Hoping to be back for next week's @tvisgoodpod.bsky.social, but happy that @kvanaren.bsky.social was able to get @roxana-hadadi.bsky.social to step in for me to talk about Lee Raybon and Lorelai Gilmore.

With Alan still out sick, Kathryn is joined by Vulture’s Roxana Hadadi. They talk about the new season of The Lowdown, then look back at another show set in an insular community with a charming but difficult protagonist: Gilmore Girls. Watch on YouTube:

Rod Serling + John Frankenheimer was a winning formula on TV, and it sure was here. Plus, we used to have real movie posters!

Randomly put on Everybody Wants Some!! for first time in forever. Began wondering if Willoughby was named as an homage to Twilight Zone. Then got to the scene where Willoughby has almost every ep on VHS. So… yeah.

Appreciate how many other people, like me, first encountered TZ with a classroom assignment on The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.
