I gotta think that the only reason Meta would settle a social media addiction (for children) lawsuit for 17 billion (18 billion if the Texas settlement is included) is if they were doing some extremely nefarious things that they did not want to be disclosed at trial.

The bigger problem right now is the failure of Congress to put any sort of restraint on Trump/Executive. Right now, Republicans in Congress aren't doing their job, and as a result, the president has zero accountability. The infection is much deeper than simply Trump or his administration.
