This is how we used to do it before 9/11 as well and there’s no reason we can’t just go back to the airlines being responsible for their own security and employing private companies to do it.
For the baggage screening roles (as opposed to the other TSA stuff like flight marshals) I don’t think that’s a big deal. Canada, Australia and most of Europe use private security companies for baggage screening.
I have a new novella out in the 20th Anniversary edition of Clarkesworld this month!
"The Job" is about a woman with serious self-image issues who takes a contract to survey an alien ocean for corporate exploitation, wearing the body of a bioengineered whale.

If you could make any 5 people vanish from history, completely removing everything they accomplished and leaving no trace that they ever existed, who would the other 4 be?
Milton Friedman.
Ayn Rand.
Lewis Powell.
Ronald Reagan.
Jeff Bezos and I are very different people. For one thing, he is a sociopathic billionaire who built his fortune by monopolizing bookselling while I am a penniless author of books. He was born in 1964 and is 62; I was born in 1971 and am 55.
As a Gen X I love how we went from being called lazy, cynical slackers to somehow being boomer 2.0. It’s all bullshit, the propaganda machine needs to continually convince younger people that working yourself to death is noble. We called in sick all the time, I just did last week because I was sick.
AI is alarming for many reasons: it's a dangerous financial bubble, an environmental catastrophe, and a tool for eroding wages and labor power. But in addition to all that, AI is an epistemic disaster.

I have one coworker who’s covered in nature themed tattoos. Every so often they’ll have an appointment for another and when you ask what they’re getting they just shrug and say “I’ll find out when it’s done.”
The fundraising texts you delete are working on someone. It’s infuriating and heartbreaking.
An 85yo in Ohio gave more than double the value of his home. A 91yo in an Indianapolis senior facility gave 25K times.
The DCCC/DSCC don’t just tolerate the spammers who exploit seniors. They take part.
James Talarico: 50 years ago, a corporate lawyer named Lewis Powell circulated a memo around DC — a blueprint for how corporations could amass political power, reverse the gains of the Great Society and the New Deal, and rig the system for themselves.
And it worked.
The only responsible attitude for liberals and progressives to align on is that all right-wing grievances, claims and believes are not only false, but malicious lies. Nothing passes the mouth of an American conservative in public life that is not meant to harm and destroy the lives of millions.
Vigilante movie but it’s about a guy who’s kid is killed by an asshole in a brodozer because he was biking in the street. The father targets drivers who killed or injured pedestrians and were let off with a slap on the wrist because of our biased legal system. Give me a call Hollywood.
Unlike other vigilante movies mine has ready made escalation in the sequels as the main character goes after auto executives, oil executives and the entire industry that creates the conditions for a man to feel that it’s ok to murder a child for mildly inconveniencing him for a minute or two.
There was a pizza place in a nearby mall that was 80s nostalgia themed and it was great. Get a slice and a drink and play one of the several 80s arcade cabinets they had.
the nostalgia diner industry should have aged past the 50s. I should be able to go to an era-accurate 90s diner, served a room temp Fruitopia by staff in babydoll dresses, there should be a Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition machine against the wall. They could sell Desert Storm trading cards.
Every so often on here I’ll start out agreeing with people and then slowly go “Ok there’s nuance here, maybe you could chill… um ok we’re kinda ganging up on someone who’s on our side… and it’s a full on dogpile…” and back away. Y’all need to take a breath sometimes.
Probably a popular opinion around here but no sports stadium built with any public money should be named after a corporation and naming rights money should absolutely never go to the owners of the team. If the people built it they should be able to name it.
I’ve got 28 years of seniority in a unionized county job, a pension and a paid off house and I don’t feel the slightest bit confident about the future because I know for a fact that the oligarchs will burn everything I have to the ground in a second as soon as they get the chance, just for fun.
Oh man I sure love that new thing that Bluesky does where if you’re looking at an image and flick it away instead of tapping the X it kicks you all the way back to the top of your feed. I definitely hope they don’t get rid of that.
There aren't a lot of things I agree with Mark Carney about, but there's one area where he and I are in *total* accord: the old, US-dominated, "rules-based international order" was total bullshit:

All of his businesses and property should be nationalized and dissolved and he should be stripped of literally every single asset and dollar. Put him in public housing and let him live off of whatever UBI the next Congress passes.
It will never stop pissing me off how much trump is going to walk away from this presidency as a “real” billionaire in a way he never was before, and it is going to be solely because of the public office
This is what we get instead of health care. About a hundred million dollars in aircraft up in smoke due to friendly fire with weapons we probably sold to Kuwait. Meanwhile I have a friend who’s fighting to keep their Medicare so they don’t die.

I wasn't kidding about this very long 2-part reddit reply, most of which is not pictured in my screenshot. I learned so much. Best thing I read all weekend.

Tatjana Wood was the first colorist that I actually noticed when reading comics as a teenager. She showed what a colorist could bring to the art of comics and it was always a pleasure to see her work.
So sad to share that legendary colorist Tatjana Wood has passed away at the age of 99. Her pioneering painterly touch graced scores of DC & Vertigo series. She was truly one of a kind and a special friend. May her memory be a blessing.

As someone who grew up on (white) teen movies, I was struck by how much that Patel scene looked like something straight out of a spec script in the 1980s. The racialized minority over performing nationalism as white frat boys clearly broadcast to everyone but him that he is not really one of them.
For all those who still don’t understand what a first amendment rights violation is and what isn’t. This is a first amendment right violation. Government officials using their power to silence speech they don’t like.
A federal judge has ruled that the City of Newton violated the rights of a critic by twice having the man arrested at city council meetings, Clark Kauffman reports.
Also I’m sure that the mayor’s decision to not seek reelection was strongly influenced by the fact that he knew this quote would be used in any opponent’s campaign literature.
Every time I write about measles, experts warn that polio is next.
But it's been so long since we had polio outbreaks, there are very few doctors who even know how to treat its long-term health issues. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
Note these bits of information in particular. I bet if you looked at the administrative costs of attempting to collect that money, they would exceed the amount collected, meaning that the state is spending more money than it’s generating with these fees.
An advocate for the right to counsel says it’s common across the U.S. for deals to dismiss a case to hinge on paying court costs. “The problem is you don’t want to create a system where only people who have access to money get access to dismissed cases.”
Decades ago my library was going after patron’s tax returns for unpaid fines, until someone actually did the math and found out that we were spending more in staff salaries to do the paperwork than we were getting back in collected fines. I think it’s going to be the same thing here.
151 million over a decade with only 2.3 percent collected works out to 350k per year collected, pretty easy to go over that in staff time and other expenses incurred attempting to collect money that people don’t have.
Whenever you have a female character that knows how to fight or shoot and you want to explain why, remember that “Because I wanted to.” Is a complete sentence.
