A good rule of thumb in judging character is how they treat people they have nothing to gain by being nice to. Another good rule of thumb is what groups they’re willing to throw under the bus, be it trans people, Palestinians, poor people.

As always with this kind of story ask yourself who benefits? It sounds like Streeting finds the defence industry is as generous as the private healthcare lobby was to him.

The warnings are coming fast & furious. "UK to warn citizens to stock up on food amid threat from climate crisis & hostile states. Government resilience campaign aims to ensure people can cope in a national disaster, in order to free resources for most vulnerable" www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

In drink news I’ve only had 2 pints in the last 2 weeks. I have developed an expensive root beer habit though. It’s hard to acquire in deindustrialised south East Northumberland

I’m going to see Stewart Lee this afternoon. I haven’t been to many comedy gigs and always think it’ll be like a pantomime and some lucky kids will be called up on stage to join in.

If you read them from the beginning they're the words of a dog who desperately wants you to come over because they've seen a frisbee

OMG have you seen how many letters Big Dave has got after his name?

Last RT. Of course Brian Clough went for a meeting to be the new James Bond but was always too much of a maverick for them. IIRC Ron Greenwood won the tux that time.

Thank god the rock-ribbed manly titans of unrelenting belligerence keep winning elections, can you imagine if the sappy hippies had won.

A man just got on our train at Leeds. He came through the carriage, dragging a suitcase and getting in everyone’s way. ‘We’ve paid for first class, southern fairy coming through!’ Presumably he was heading to the first class carriage to join the rest of the ‘southern fairies’.

Word that Spanish comics creator Sanjulián (Manuel Pérez Clemente) has left us, at age 85. Sanjulián was renowned for his covers, like this stunner. Sanjulián came to the US as one of Warren mag’s “Spanish Invasion” of the 1970s.

I’m in favour of measures to dissuade people from blaring out sounds from their phones on public transport. Ignorant cunts. I don’t want to hear their mindless garbage.

A chocolate vortex sounds lovely.

Many people in writer Rachel Handler’s life felt that something was amiss, that commercial chocolate didn’t taste the way it used to. For our Cover Story, Handler spends several months tumbling down a chocolate vortex to find out why. www.grubstreet.com/article/choc...

This poem by Hugo Williams generates much of its power from restraint and matter-of-fact language. The loss of innocence and the dismantling of absolutes are devastatingly portrayed here without the need for any linguistic fireworks...
