For at least half a century, the plastics industry has been aware of and concerned about microplastics infiltrating the human body. Important reporting by @susrust.bsky.social, who obtained memos showing executives and scientists knew about the hazards decades ago www.latimes.com/environment/...
The Voluntary Agreements "is a plan for delay, litigation, worsening status quo, and appeasement of water users, despite their continued threats not to do the things they proposed," as Baykeeper's Eric Buescher writes in our latest @mavensnotebook.com commentary:
mavensnotebook.com/2026/10/20/g...
In our latest commentary, we outline how flawed the Voluntary Agreements process was—including the fact that the communities with the most to lose from a bad deal, such as Tribal and fishing groups, were excluded from negotiations:
mavensnotebook.com/2026/10/22/g...
... but there's a better way! The next governor can still preserve the ecological treasures of the Bay-Delta estuary and manage our water resources sustainably, as we write in our latest piece on the Voluntary Agreements for @mavensnotebook.commavensnotebook.com/2026/10/27/g...
Congratulations to club member Catherine Breed, the first person to swim the 900-mile length of the California coast!

I co-wrote a thing:
Why do environmental, Tribal, & fishing communities oppose Gov. Newsom’s backroom deals with powerful water districts?
Because they won’t reverse deteriorating 💧quality & closed fisheries of San Francisco Bay’s watershed.

"This is wonderful news for Oakland," said Ben Eichenberg, senior staff attorney for San Francisco Baykeeper. "It's my hope that what this means is that the city feels it can once again take a stand representing the majority of people in Oakland who do not want this terminal."
The Trump-backed coal export terminal in Oakland would process over 13 million tons annually--three times its previously approved capacity--raising severe concerns for community & Bay health
“There was absolutely ample water available to keep the river colder,” said Jon Rosenfield, science director for @sfbaykeeper.bsky.social, but the Trump admin chose to deliver large quantities of from Shasta reservoir this summer.
“The fish are not being protected...those eggs are getting cooked.”
Coastal Cleanup Day is this Saturday, 9/19! Our cleanup is currently full but there are lots of others around the Bay Area looking for volunteers: www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/ccd...
“As we celebrate the 50th year of the Coastal Act, Coastal Cleanup Day serves as an important reminder that we all need to show up to protect our coast,” said Executive Director Kate Huckelbridge.
An unusually high tide combined with storms pushing extra water toward the shore will push seas up more than a foot above normal for a brief mid-week stretch.
The Trump Admin wants to bring toxic coal pollution to the Bay Area. We need @governor.ca.gov to sign #AB40, the Community First Coal Review Act, a bill to protect us from this dirty coal project!

TOMORROW, Ocean Hoptimism follows
Sierra Garcia & the @sfestuaryinstitute.bsky.social as they piece together clues connecting our streets and streams to the Bay—and reveal what's traveling with the water.
Join us Aug. 27, at Faction Brewing in Alameda. @sfbaykeeper.bsky.social will be there, too!
💧 TAKE ACTION: Tell your representatives to support Tribal water equity and vital safeguards for California water!
This week, several key water bills that we've been tracking are advancing through the legislature. We need your help to make sure they cross the finish line!

A troubling catch: @sfestuaryinstitute.bsky.social found 20 types of PFAS “forever chemicals” in Bay fish. On Aug. 27, meet the SFEI scientists tracing pollution upstream toward solutions.
Our friends at @sfbaykeeper.bsky.social will also be tabling w/ more ways you can help protect the Bay.
🚨 Action alert! Help stop the Trump Admin's attempt to weaken protections for the California coast & SF Bay.
This move could open the door to new offshore drilling and other harmful projects - comments are due by 8/22:

Before. After. No regrets. 🍷🌊
Friday happy hour: Rosé for the Bay by Obsidian Wines in Sonoma—because apparently you can drink with a conscience. Proceeds benefit @sfbaykeeper.bsky.social and a healthier San Francisco Bay.
Saving the Bay, one empty bottle at a time. 😇
USFWS refused to list white sturgeon as endangered despite agreeing they fit all the criteria; a horrific mistake. I'll never forget seeing giant fish longer than I am tall, as old as my parents, dead due to a HAB in SF Bay in 2022. These fish need our help.

Thanks to Obsidian Wine for an incredible release party in Sonoma yesterday for the 2025 Rosé for the Bay, benefiting the outstanding work of @sfbaykeeper.bsky.social. Crisp rosé, briny Hog Island Oysters, and a wonderful community gathered in support of San Francisco Bay.
Kate Josephs & Michael Herz—the 1970s eco-warrior who founded Baykeeper—are back in the Bay, and they have some stories to tell on their wonderful podcast ONCE UPON A BAY 🐟
Today at COYOTE: We spoke to a meteorologist about why we can't just fixate on how powerful this year's El Niño's gonna be. Every climate headline tells two stories: one about rainfall, and another about how it interacts with the human world it’ll land on. www.coyotemedia.org/a-climate-ex...
The restoration effort, as Baykeeper scientist @jarosenfield.bsky.social points out, is admirable but inadequate for saving the Delta Smelt: "It's like building a very nice playground in a neighborhood you've allowed to burn down."
No California governor in living memory has been worse for San Francisco Bay than Gavin Newsom. California’s next Governor must do better.
“We have a rare opportunity to tame California’s thirst; let’s not waste it.”

An industry that handles a huge volume of toxic waste in the Bay Area is attempting to get a sweetheart carveout from the state, as our attorney Ben Eichenberg writes, which is why we're urging lawmakers to reject SB 811

Radioactive material found at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is fueling fresh concerns about redevelopment and community health.

#ICYMI: A new piece highlights Eric Buescher of @sfbaykeeper.bsky.social and Chris Shutes of the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance, criticizing Governor Newsom and other political figures’ efforts to push the multi-billion-dollar Sites Reservoir project.

Important read on how neutral regulators are being challenged by the Newsom Administration in California.
Sadly, Newsom criticizes Trump for such actions, yet mimics the behavior.
In an overt act of political meddling, Newsom and his deputies are pressuring a judge to retract evidence-based findings on the Sites Reservoir Project.
But the facts are clear: the project cannot operate as proposed without harm to rivers, fish & ecosystems:

Did you know that we have an online gallery of magnified sand photos from California beaches? It's amazing what you see when you look close! Have fun exploring at www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/sand
If you want to help us preserve the Bay's sand (which provides loads of benefits for wildlife and shorelines) click here: baykeeper.org/take-action-...
Across the SF Bay shoreline, communities are living alongside a legacy of industrial activity. Sea level rise is raising new questions about what happens when contaminated sites meet a changing shore. Tune in to our new podcast to learn more. @sfbaykeeper.bsky.social
A year of Ocean Hoptimism means looking back at the people helping protect the waters we love.
Last August, we welcomed Sejal Choksi-Chugh, Exec. Director of @sfbaykeeper.bsky.social, for a conversation about science, advocacy, accountability, and what it takes to stand up for San Francisco Bay. 🌊💙
Deep gratitude to Sejal Choksi-Chugh, Executive Director of @sfbaykeeper.bsky.social, for sharing Baykeeper’s story last night. Proof that a small team of scientists, attorneys & advocates can take on big polluters and win for SF Bay. 🌊💪 #OceanHoptimism#SFBaykeeper
