one thing I'll add: crude oil isn't the only thing stuck behind the Strait of Hormuz. pre-war, around 900kbpd of diesel and 350kbpd of jet fuel would transit Hormuz. and unlike oil, now it's largely NOT getting out.

we have a refined fuels crisis even more than we have an oil crisis. there's a lot of refining capacity offline right now, and that's arguably an even more important bottleneck than crude oil availability.

fwiw, I agree with AES! in retrospect, the Straits of Mackinac was an objectively stupid place to put an oil pipeline but Line 5 also represents 540,000 bpd of oil & NGLs, most of which goes straight through to Sarnia. about half of the flow of petroleum from Western Canada to Eastern Canada

what Canada and Ontario need to do, and have not done -- Ontario, in particular -- is to start laying the groundwork for a world in which a Line 5 shutdown isn't a significant disruption for the energy security of Eastern Canada.
