By the time I tried Twitter it was already a bit of a cesspit and I just couldn't tolerate it - it then got worse - joining Bluesky early in the cycle to hopefully enjoy something a bit more constructive and genuinely social. Howdy all!

A vote for Aontú is a vote for Fianna Fáil. A vote for Aontú is a vote to strip abortion rights & bodily autonomy. Vote for PBP, the only ones ruling out coalition with FF&FG, then transfer left. Don't be duped by Aontú & other right-wingers who want to roll back hard-won rights. #ge24 #SpéirGhorm

When a person in the street is yelling into a megaphone about some insanity, none of us are obligated to approach and engage to dispute their madness and have our eardrums pummelled in the process. Politely ignoring and getting on with our own lives has long been accepted as the civil thing to do.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez@aoc.bsky.social

One thing I find interesting about the echo chamber complaint is that an echo chamber just won a presidential election. Put aside the convo of whether it’s “good” or “bad” for a moment. The far right has devoted enormous resources + time to building echo chambers & loathes spaces they don’t control

“After an hour or so of scrolling through Bluesky the other night, I felt something I haven’t felt on social media in a long time: free. Free from Elon Musk, and his tedious quest to turn X into a right-wing echo chamber where he and his friends are the permanent, inescapable main characters.”

nytimes.comBluesky Is Turning Into a Strong X Alternative (Gift Article)Bluesky has a hint of the old Twitter magic, but the feeling of freedom it offers might be even better.

Reviewing the Manifestos of the main parties: Fine Gael "Continuing the Landlord Tax Credit until 2030 for landlords who stay in the rental market, encouraging stability." Using tax breaks to prop up rent-seeking behaviour in order to provide "stability" to a broken system... very cool. #GE24

✨Little reminder that Aontu exists because Peadar Tóibín resigned from Sinn Fein because of its support for Repeal. They want to seriously curtail women’s access to abortion, and would overturn repeal if they could.✨

Subscribe to lists like this and do a mass block. I’ve subscribed to several but not if you can see which I use? bsky.app/profile/luke...

Bluesky will attract bad actors, it's not immune. The good news is you don't have to block them one by one, Bluesky has moderation lists managed by others (or even you) to help you mass block accounts as they turn up. All you need to do is visit the list, hit subscribe, then choose block or mute.

Big news from Guardian Towers this morning... The Guardian has announced it will no longer post content on Elon Musk’s X from official accounts. (I'm staying put - for now - as feel it's important to at least try to retain some balance there). www.theguardian.com/media/2024/n...
