Hello BlueSky! I'm an environmental writer & advocate living on Jilkáat Aani, also known as Haines, Alaska. I also spend time in Corca Dhuibhne, the westest of West Kerry, Ireland, where I write, improve my Irish, and play with dogs. I write creative nonfiction, poetry, and advocacy pieces.

Sometimes, in fall and winter, the rain pounding on the metal roof intensifies to what it sounded like The Night of the Landslides, and on those nights, there is no sleep. These are the sounds of climate crisis.

Decorating my office for Halloween (there’s a community event happening here), and I’m very conscious that I’m currently stretching plastic filament cobwebs across actual, genuine cobwebs. Somehow the plastic kind are the socially acceptable ones. 🕸️🕷️🕸️

don't miss local tunes at your local dive. the singer sounds like Dolly Parton more than a little, without trying, only I'm 10 feet away. A couple is dancing in the only empty floor space. the balcony fire pits are roaring. the bartender just named a drink after me.

Oh this looks wonderful!

Amy Liptrot's new book The Tangles is a wonderful, immersive, powerful book. On Orkney Amy writes about birth & death, science & folklore. The magic of selkie & seaweed are elementally entangled with family life, with hope & love. I loved it 🤗 The Tangles is ublished next Feb @canongate.co.uk

Climate trauma is its own special kind of horror.

It's landslide season in Southeast Alaska 😬 An atmospheric river is hitting today into Friday, and there is a flood watch and increased risk for "possible isolated landslides" in the southern panhandle ready.alaska.gov/Documents/Si...

He said herring lugger, in that way. You could walk across the harbor on their decks. I said shapeshifty anadromous fish. He described a gannet crashing down from the sky beside a schooner. I handed him my kaleidoscope. He gazed through it at the islands to the west while I put on a pretty dress.

Important, nuanced context in response to The Onion's Indigenous People's Day post. Many will re-post the Onion piece in a well-meaning spirit without thinking it through. Here's some important perspective from an Indigenous voice close to the person in the photo to help think these things through.

hey ben. the guy in the picture here is an actual person, my friend’s dad, and a spiritual leader of Lakota people, Chief Arvol Looking Horse. not only does he support Indigenous People’s Day, he’s the founder of World Peace and Prayer Day. feels weird to use his image and not his name.

Alaska isn’t the only state seeing an early flu season. There has been reported activity across the Western states. Some experts point to a new variant that evolved a mutation as a potential cause for the early season.

When you prattle on like an eejit to the nice man beside you who says he writes plays and then eventually realise exactly which playwright he is, and he’s not some dilettante, but one of the greatest play/screenwriters of our time and one who helped to shape your worldview as a young person……..🤪🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

When I first saw the news I thought, is that the old Cornell case or a new one? Or another one altogether? And this is not just Cornell. This is happening across most of our institutions. It happened when I was in high school, college, and grad school. It keeps happening. We know. Everyone knows.

1,200 sexual assault cases were filed at Cornell from 2018 to 2024. Most of those found responsible received minor sanctions that allowed them to remain on campus, such as probation or training. Only 7 ended in expulsion or dismissal. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

You can deny this is true, but ask yourself... Who was it who first got you into Pentangle and early Funkadelic? Who introduced you to Faust and Charles Mingus and Linda Perhacs and Cher's cover of 'Walk On Gilded Splinters'? Was it a dog? No, it was a cat you met under a dank bridge.

300 years later, Turlough O'Carolan is still a composer so far ahead of his time. Eleanor Plunkett in particular is perhaps the most beautiful musical composition of all time in my estimation. There's the advantage of being spirited away & taught harp by the Fairies, of course!

Check out my dear friend Richard’s beautiful blog about our recent creative expedition circumnavigating Spitsbergen!

✏️ Day Twelve. A bear in the water is two small ears moving through the chop. On Ytre Norskøya the ground has been pushing whalers’ coffins back up and the best animal of the trip turned out to be a fox cub the size of a housecat. #arctic #svalbard #arcticcircle #polarbear #arcticfox

C’mon, JKT. Do better. Go left. Represent the people who advanced you to the general election.

😞 Concessions to the bad guys are exactly what he’s proposing. Our *legislature* is already composed of R, D and independents! If I vote for him I want folks who will support and help enact his programs and ideas. 😡😳🙄 Good grief!

A bitter-sweet moment to receive copies of Manchán's final book

Raven Books@ravenbooks.bsky.social

He thought he had more time. Published mid-September, unfinished as he left it, with a foreword by Robert Macfarlane. www.manchansbooks.com/books/p/seei...

As someone who buys plenty of Irish whiskey in the US, it is the only commodity in my life whose price hasn’t skyrocketed in the last year or so. The tariff removal is pure distraction from real issues. Micheál & Shane are a disgrace. 🥾👅 And I really liked Lowry till now! Gwan the tiny snails!

You might not know how much you love eels until you start learning about their mysterious lives, and then you will not stop thinking about them, ever.

Surprised Eel Historian, PhD@greenleejw.bsky.social

I wrote a thread the other day about eels' life cycle, 'cause it's a wild story. Fun stuff! But did you know that I also did a map? And that you can own it? It's true! I drew a map of the eels' life cycle, from their perspective, and you can order one for your wall! #eels #maps etsy.me/3Nvk5jK

Our dear Manchán's final work is available for pre-order at www.manchansbooks.com/books/p/seei...

While I was very excited to receive this in the post this morning, that excitement was dampened by the knowledge that this will be the last book we’ll get from Manchán, a rare talent taken from us far too early.
