hey ben. the guy in the picture here is an actual person, my friend’s dad, and a spiritual leader of Lakota people, Chief Arvol Looking Horse. not only does he support Indigenous People’s Day, he’s the founder of World Peace and Prayer Day. feels weird to use his image and not his name.

Thank you- I was not happy at the inaccurate information too- that's clearly Chief Arvol Looking Horse. I hope Ben and The Onion respond to this. Thank you for speaking up.

Avoiding that is kind of difficult when they likely rely on free or licensed photos. Usually the subject isn’t as problematic. I will note that the article is from 2019 which is long before Ben got involved.

Hey Ben - I realize this piece is from 4 or 5 years before your time at The Onion, but going back and fixing or removing it would still be the right thing to do.

Not speaking for her or the man in the picture, but even “a holiday is great, but land back would be even better” would make the same joke in a way that doesn’t trivialize the holiday

is it a normal thing to sell journalistic photos of people as bloody _stock images_? it's one thing to sell stock images of actors that were taken for the explicit purpose and with consent to be used as stock images, but actual documentary photos? wtf

Shame on me for assuming the random photo of a Native American selected for this article, which otherwise makes a good point, was one used with permission in the first place. And, to be clear, the holidays aren't pointless by any stretch, and a far sight better than Columbus Day ever was.

I’m a big fan of the onion, but this piece has always been a little weird to me because most Indigenous People don’t support Columbus Day and actually fought pretty hard against it. and we can ask for one day in addition to landback.

also just going to say, the fake name…chief longtoe? pretty racist and abenaki people don’t wear plains headdresses okay i am done

thank you, i immediately thought 'what kind of weird tokenism is this, i hope everyone agreed to it' when i saw the image. glad to know the story of the real person

No matter how they want to seem like allies, almost invariably, when presented with opportunities to do better, white dudes with a little bit of power will choose not to. Filed under “Disappointed but not surprised”

Couldn't agree more. Poor taste is what you do when you're out of actual good ideas. Another classic example here, a fucking thorn in the eye to those of us who lost people on 9/11. They were told it's shit and post it again and again.
