Seeing these students march from Carmel High School to City Hall is a powerful reminder that infrastructure is a democratic tool. Human-scale design doesn't just make a city nice, it makes civic engagement physically possible for all ages and abilities.

It was fun to present this at the recent Strong Towns Carmel monthly meeting! I really think ADUs could be one (of many) small zoning changes the city makes to enable more missing middle housing.

Carmel, like every city, is looking for solutions to the housing affordability crisis. Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are one possible solution.

Nothing pisses me off more than getting a fundraising text from Democrats talking about how they’re fighting fascism… Because it’s such bullshit. We’re not idiots. Everyone knows most of them aren’t doing jack shit right now to fight back.

Carmel is a Strong Town 💪

Cycling to the gym just now I passed by our downtown fire station and saw a member of the fire department heading out to run an errand on his personal e-cargo bike that was also set up to haul kids. Say what you will about Carmel Indiana, but we've got some amazing things happening here.

Critics who don’t live here dismiss Carmel Indiana as a performative suburb for the rich. That view ignores the reality. This city is actively investing in walkability, bikeability, and denser land use, steps most suburbs won’t even attempt. It’s not perfect, but it’s real progress.

What is the worst type of transportation design? Meet the stroad, a dangerous sinkhole of money that half-heartedly incorporates non-auto infrastructure into a high-speed system. Learn more and get involved by tapping the link in our bio. #strongtowns #indianapolis #urbanism #transportation

A city nearby my own (within biking distance) is proposing a 10% cap on single-family rentals. While they claim to be targeting investors, the ordinance would be a blanket ban on all single-family rentals. This will stop @strongtowns.org incremental development from ever happening in this city.

Who would bother financing an ADU in their backyard if they can't rent it? What developer would risk building a duplex (as if it was even legal to begin with) if they can't rent it? This will further cement SFH (for sale) and apartments (for rent) as the only options. Say goodbye to missing middle.

I can barely afford a house in my city. The people we depend on to cook and serve our food, teach our children, fight our fires, and more are struggling more than me. Carmel, like most cities in America, needs to make changes to solve this. I wrote about it here: simpixelated.com/how-to-build...
