📢 Some news from me: I've written a book with the erudite and eloquent Fintan O'Toole in which we each argue for - and then against - Irish unity, setting out objectively what seem to us each side's best arguments, and the issues people across the island of Ireland should consider.

Northern Ireland's collapsing health service is a scandal; Stormont knew this would happen - and has allowed it. Vast sums have been paid to temporary staff to prop up a system MLAs admitted a decade ago was unsustainable. Now even that isn’t working.

belfasttelegraph.co.ukFixing our crippled NHS is a life-and-death issue, yet politicians pay it lip service and then make a beeline for DrumcreeFor at least a decade politicians have known gravity of the situation but keep choosing populism over courage and leadership

A decade ago today, Prof Rafael Bengoa delivered his seminal health report; much has been ignored. 📉Then, 226,000 people were waiting for outpatient treatment; now 527,000 are. 🔻Then, 67% of patients referred for urgent cancer treatment got started in 62 days; now just 28% do.

Rhinos, Provos and loyalist terror bosses: Northern Ireland has become the land of the absurd where words have lost their meaning. Society is pretending all is well, when deeply abnormal behaviour has become not only acceptable but encouraged.

Stormont descends into chaos as Michelle O’Neill walks out, leaving Emma Little-Pengelly unable to continue: After O'Neill belatedly agrees to attend scrutiny committee, FM-dFM chasm is impossible to conceal or deny. This is now government in name only.

Jeffrey Donaldson’s incessant trips to the developing world raise dark new questions about shadow career abroad: DUP MP visited African country 10 times in less than 3 years, helped flog weapons alongside a British general & worked with special forces man.

London shouldn’t give Stormont any more money - extra cash has been perversely making things worse for the public. The Executive is an emperor with no clothes: It’s strutting around buck naked and far too many people who know this are silent.

Jeffrey Donaldson was a key and ‘very keen’ British asset in sensitive west African conflict, paid thousands while Irish Sea border was emerging. Documents show prized role working with Cameroonian dictator’s forces, luxury hotel stays, and personal cash.

While the DUP was losing its fight against the Brexit 'backstop', Donaldson was being flown in & out of a dangerous 'amber zone' where two medical facilities were ready to treat him if attacked, was guarded by elite forces and was paid to help the MoD meet its strategic goals.

As Barack Obama speaks to an audience of more than 10,000 people in Belfast's O2 Arena, talking abut the fragility of democracy around the world, someone shouts out loudly from the crowd: "F**k Stormont".

Andrew Muir might block a public register of toxic land - despite agreeing there should be one. Asbestos, arsenic & lead are in soil across Northern Ireland, but Stormont doesn’t want us to know where; Muir doesn't seem like he's going to change that.

Counterintuitive as it seems, many senior unionists — and even some top Orangemen — will have been quietly delighted when, late on Friday evening, the Garvaghy Road parade was banned. But how this situation has developed now creates major problems.

belfasttelegraph.co.ukDrumcree ban confirms doctrine that, in Northern Ireland, might is right — and that’s a huge problemLast few weeks have shown if you can get enough people on the streets, the law doesn’t matter

Imagine if the Executive parties treated the Lough Neagh scandal with even half the effort which they expended on Drumcree: Crisis meetings, emergency court cases, constant pressure - even breaking the law to achieve a goal. Instead, there's simply no urgency as the lough dies.

Factory farming is killing Lough Neagh – and despite Andrew Muir’s opposition to this, he’s incentivising it. Muir is a radically different minister - yet his ‘kill them young’ scheme is squeezing out traditional farming and encouraging US-style megafarms.

Next Thursday night I’ll be in discussion at the Belfast Exposed gallery with poet & ex-journalist Angela Graham. Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has described her latest collection, inspired by the horrors of the Ukraine War, as “exceptional”. Free🎟️below:

Long read on Drumcree stand-off: Even moderate hearts are hardened as fears of contagion mount. Top unionists & Orange are privately both furious and worried, while previously unreported comments from Breandán Mac Cionnaith reveal the key player’s mindset.

There are no true believers in Stormont any more. Everyone has lost their faith. It is a place united in despondency where MLAs knock off early. The Drumcree standoff is threatening to topple Stormont but this is merely a symptom of an underlying disease.

Could a ‘one and done’ final Drumcree parade work? Before he died, the most senior Orangeman in Portadown told me of a secret plan to definitively resolve the Drumcree dispute — with the Catholic Church at its heart.

belfasttelegraph.co.ukCould a ‘one and done’ final Drumcree parade work? A dead Orangeman’s words show this was offered in a secret processBefore he died, the most senior Orangeman in Portadown revealed a plan to definitively resolve Drumcree — with the Catholic Church at its heart

What has happened in Portadown over the last 48 hours has ramifications which will echo for years. Michelle O’Neill has shown an understanding of constitutional law which is closer to that of a medieval monarch than a democratic government minister.

belfasttelegraph.co.ukAs the First Minister behaves like a medieval monarch, flouting courts she’s bound to respect, Stormont is lurching towards collapseO’Neill’s view of her power akin to that of Richard Nixon, and has profoundly disturbing implications in other areas

Amid myriad crises and without a budget half way through the financial year, Stormont is spending three days debating if someone can invent their own gender...& if people should be jailed for trying to "suppress" that. It's been a remarkable debate so far.

New Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant is picking up where his predecessors left off. He's now offering Stormont an extra £1.5bn. This effectively vindicates ministers' refusal to budget. Why not do the same next year, and the year after that? All the tough talk meant nothing.

Northern Ireland's Legacy Commission has been highly controversial. But today after two years its first investigative report is published, leading to a "sacred and transformative moment" for the dying son of a man murdered by the IRA for being a lawyer.

belfasttelegraph.co.ukLegacy body’s report into IRA murder of SDLP founder shot dead for being lawyer brought ‘sacred and transformative moment’ to dying sonICRIR investigation examines IRA murder of devout Catholic SDLP founder killed for being a lawyer

The man murdered was Rory O'Kelly. His case was largely forgotten, and even at the time got limited press coverage. Today's 124-page report sets out how he'd trained as a priest, helped found the SDLP, and assisted the civil rights movement - but the IRA killed him regardless.

A powerful article from Rory O'Kelly's daughter, Anne Frances O'Kelly: "I thought my younger brother had got on with things after our father’s murder... I was wrong, but he finally got peace on his deathbed". She says truth is key to real reconciliation.

The man who murdered our printer 50 years ago is now laughingly boasting of his exploits, yet exposes his lies & bigotry. Thomas Louden didn't speak to me when I knocked his door yesterday - but the newspaper he bombed has obtained a telling video of him.

belfasttelegraph.co.ukMan who murdered our printer 50 years ago is now laughingly boasting of his exploits, yet they expose his lies and bigotryThomas Louden, a heroic figure within republicanism and a personal friend of Bobby Sands, made a six-hour film he thought he’d hidden — but we’ve got it

Louden expresses no remorse for Joe Paton, the "very quiet" working man he subjected to an awful death. Despite IRA claims to be non-sectarian, from Louden’s own lips spew a host of sectarian & racist terms. Yet this is a man many people regard as a hero, chanting 'up the Ra'.

When the Belfast Telegraph was bombed by the IRA in 1976, the 800 staff took refuge in St Anne's Cathedral. At midday on Saturday - the day our printer Joseph Paton died from his injuries - there will be a memorial service for him in St Anne's. All are welcome.

In today's Belfast Telegraph we have reprinted the four-page 'Penny Marvel' emergency edition which the paper's journalists - some of them injured in the blast - managed to get on the streets just hours after the bomb tried to destroy the newspaper.

Half a century ago today, the IRA bombed the Belfast Telegraph. They failed to stop the newspaper, but murdered 64-year-old printer Joseph Paton. Today his family speak publicly for the first time to recall an apolitical "ordinary, innocent man".

An intriguing shift has been happening of late: Some staunch Northern Ireland unionists are making a pro-Irish argument in favour of the Union. This is not entirely novel but a rediscovery of an argument which had become rusted through disuse.
