hi! do you want to read a romantasy about a queen who is also a dairy priest who cares for a herd of holy cows trying to re-establish social welfare through cheese distribution while her country is plagued by weird fairy magic and ancient betrayals?

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

During college, a friend told me she realized she mostly thought mean thoughts about strangers. So she began sitting in a common area between buildings and practiced thinking one nice thing for as many people as she could. "It was hard until it wasn't and then it was like a light switch flipped"

re lrp: I read something on a fat acceptance blog long ago which I try to do sometimes: when I am on public transport or have an idle moment at my job, I look at people around me and imagine what that person would look like to me if I was someone who knew and loved them.

I found a nest of transphobes who need to hear this and now will not because I am on a blocking spree but I'm going to say it for any I miss: If someone's physical body disgusts you, that is a problem with YOU.

today I learned that in the 1780s Swiss cattle were imported and kept on the Champs-Élysées (which were, at that time, actual kitchen gardens), but there still wasn't enough grass for them and also no one liked the smell

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I don't even like debating the utility of LLMs any more because you get trapped there without talking about the consequences. The consequences fucking suck.

and NOW: Reba McEntire's "Greatest Hits" from -- wait for it -- NINETEEN EIGHTY-SEVEN, which is how I found out that 1. Reba released *eleven studio albums* between 1977 and 1986 2. Reba and my mom briefly had the same curly poofy hair

y'all for my own ego I need you to know that I do have some facility in French? like I passed a master's course which was half taught in that language. but if I sit down to read ("Histoire et dictionnaire de Paris" by Alfred Fierro) I instantly discover a vast universe of unfamiliar vocabulary!!!

I'm looking for information about streetlamps so of course I am reading about the sale of eggs. in this entry we have: "coquetier" (egg cup or eggseller in this case); "manne" (large wicker basket); "cercueil" (casket).

"forain" (etymologically related to "foreign" but replaced by "étranger" in that sense in French, so it got mixed up with "foire" and became "stallholder" or "relating to fairs or fairgrounds"). aside: THE PAST WAS FULL OF BASKETS

hey! everyone I know is grieving someone or something! maybe you would like to read a column about grief regarding pets!

This week's column is about a fraught subject: What do you do when you know someone with an animal who is clearly suffering, but appears to be in denial about end-of-life decisionmaking and care?

I was three years old when this album came out, and I can still sing the chorus of "Is There Life Out There" from memory "she's done what she should/should she do what she dares/she doesn't want to leave/she just wonders if there's life out there"

(a quick perusal of Reba's discography reveals that the record which brought her to general popularity and also has the most visceral hooks in my gut is "For My Broken Heart" from 1991)
