I just got a text. (Wallet name), if you live at (real address), computer models say the likelihood of you voting is: LIKELY. Vote by 11/3! A: creepy. B: why you bugging me, then?

I have been given a copy of T Kingfisher's Blorbo Backstory but it is taking forever to arrive. I had an audible credit left and got the audio for while I wait, tho I usually read with eyes first, ears second. My contribution to the discourse: this is entertaining as hell.

*Long sigh* Yeah it seems like this is exactly what's up, actually. This new "NaNoWriMo" 2.0 is AI all the way. prowritingaid.com/novel-november Their website tries *real* hard not to mention AI, but then you catch stuff like, "...ran it through Plot Analysis" and yeah that's kind of a giveaway.

So, wait, has NaNoWriMo rebranded as "Novel November", paid for by ProWritingAid, which used to be a spell/grammar checker but now is (you guessed it) an "'AI' grammar checker"--in short, yet another way for a griftslop machine to grab human-written text? Do I have that right?

Because it was ProWritingAid's "donation" that kicked off the whole NaNo "no, no no, the plagiarism machine is GOOD actually, and if you don't let it steal your work you're ABLEIST" thing, so far as I recall.

I just got an email from lithub trying to talk me into this and i am annoyed.

the thing about this is that the L.A.Times is basically pre-emptively anouncing their intention to publish fallacious and defamatory material

Well this is eleventy-million kinds of Fucked Up. @latimes.com (who once contracted with me as a freelance reviewer and whom I struggled to get paid by) asserts that *merely reading its website* constitutes a permanent waiver of your right to sue it under *any circumstances*.

Every few weeks some cynical edgelord who wants to feel More Sophisticated And Leftist than I am will tell me that I've seen the last free & fair election in this country, and my sweet summer child. We have not even seen the first yet.

Kari Dru reposted

Also the US has never had free & fair elections for everyone, and if this is your first time worrying about it, welcome to the party! Fortunately lots of people have been here for decades and know what to do, if you are ready to listen!

correct states further down the path of autocracy than us have had those autocracies overthrown by sufficiently large voting numbers recently we can do it here too

A lot of people need to slow down and acknowledge to themselves that they're afraid, and this is affecting how they are interacting with other people. You have to acknowledge the reality of your feelings, or you won't control how they shape your behavior.

Ok, so what’s going to happen today is that white folks are going to weaponize what happened in Brazil to harass, condescend and chastise Black and Brown people about voting as if we are the one that keep voting for bigots. They never look at themselves as the problem. Ever.

The nice thing about local elections is that there's rarely an international disinformation attempt to muddy the record of your county road commissioner.

Why is youtube doing everything short of the Ludovico technique to make me care about someone called Lisa? A website hasn't cared THIS MUCH about what I engage with since the zon tried to make me read American Dirt.

Thinking about how shitty some of our choices are this election and a huge part of the problem is I'm convinced everyone's lying more than usual. I know they always say what they think they have to in order to get elected, but increasingly it's the party line and not what they'll do.

My heart wants to go in there and write in better choices who didn't win the primary because fuck all these "dem" assholes who voted for trump.

I don't actually know what the right thing to do is at all. Voting harm reduction is my lifelong strategy but it clearly isn't working.

The strategy of my head is straight ticket dem just to get some of the numbers more balanced if possible. I think taking the senate is critical, I think we can do it, AND i think my potential senator is a Fetterman. This sucks, tbh.

What is true is that this was a conflict—and make no mistake, this was a conflict; this was a protracted battle in a hybrid war, more than anything—that was largely fought by large numbers of people laboriously working to unfuck the nation's informational environment.

A number of years back, I and a couple hundred other enthusiastic weirdos were in the halloween parade in town. There was the regular, candy throwing, marching bands parade, and we followed at the end as a shambling zombie horde. This was planned but not announced. We were so scary lol.

The owner straight up DID NOT BELIEVE ME that it was makeup. I'm just trying to get the garlic sauce vegetarian to go and she's like "i can see your veins tho. Are you SURE I shouldn't call anyone? Waterproof eyeliner, alas, so i sat there and drank a soda and made sense for 20 minutes.

Satisfied I was not, in fact, having a heart attack, she let me go when my pizza was done. Heaven knows what she thought of the ivy embedded in my head. Anyway that was one of my favorite halloweens.

My costume was "The plants are using me as a puppet". (We could be any kind pf zombie we wanted.) I overdrew my veins in green, gave myself a grayish green pallor, and had ivy crawling out of my hair and coat. This was pretty tame compared to some.

The performance high I got off the hushed crowd literally asking what was going on, omg, had something happened? was no match for "i came straight from work to shamble all evening" so i went home instead of to the post party. Past my favorite pizza joint.

Nobody broke character as we shambled for an entire parade route. The groaning was pretty sincere by the end, there actually. Your legs aren't supposed to do that long term. Seriously tho we made children cry.

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

Vernon: so we all know that blorbo is a morally conflicted badass with a checkered past Vernon: but what my adaptation supposes Vernon: is Vernon: what if he was a morally conflicted badass with a checkered past King: oh i don't like that at all Poe: that's not my blorno Koontz: [cries]

I'm doing a Waverly Jones mysteries reread and it's jarring to be used to book five Waverly and run into book one Waverly. Her character arc is slow moving but holy shit. Anyway I'll just be over here yelling "NO DO NOT DO THAT... you're gonna do that. Sigh".

It's funny what you'll notice, tho. Been so busy trying to solve the big mystery that I didn't focus on an offhand comment that totally explains Waverly's recurring acquisition of bad peoples' pets. But it's there, being totally ignored by herself.

I'm seeing a lot of folks throwing the accusation that anyone discouraging voting for a suddenly bigoted democrat 9 days before the election of being part of an op. Is that an op, or is expressing bigotry 9 days before the election the op?

That said, get with the program. "It is critically important that all these bigoted dems lose" No. Think bigger. IT IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT THAT OUR ELECTEDS FEEL THEY MUST LISTEN TO US.

Yes. I have been told many times that aspects of my physical appearance (or all of it) disgust people, but that is always a them problem. If you have it in your heart to be disgusted at another person's body, go fix that heart.

Kari Dru@karidru.bsky.social

I found a nest of transphobes who need to hear this and now will not because I am on a blocking spree but I'm going to say it for any I miss: If someone's physical body disgusts you, that is a problem with YOU.

I think people intuitively understand that democratic candidates tossing trans kids to the wolves is not only morally repugnant but also politically ineffective, otherwise they wouldn't freak out every time someone said they weren't voting for a democrat who did this

Kari Dru reposted

If Dems want voters hustling to the polls, they need a platform that makes people excited to vote for them. Disincentivizing the left in hopes of making center-right people change party to vote for you is a losing game. The consultant class is, I think, incapable of math.
