As we learn more and more about Cluster B personality disorders like psychopathy, this is a worthwhile read penned by a forensic psychiatrist exploring how, to those affected, lying is their biggest tool. And why collateral evidence is so important to consider. www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/seco...
The most obvious example of sexism in science, which robbed a woman of the 1962 Noble Prize and instead awarded it to a 3 male scientists, one of whom was later shown to be a racist. www.the-scientist.com/rosalind-fra...

Great to see two influential persons I follow getting together to discuss important topics. They also work tirelessly to counter mis/disinformation on social media. Thanks guys.
Such a blast (and honour) to interview my friend, the amazing and engaging global health scholar, @gavinyamey.bsky.social! 🙏🙏🙏 Does global health equity and justice matter more than MAHA longevity influencer BS? Ummm....

I remember posting on Twitter 2 years ago that online gambling was going to be a serious & dangerous societal issue. This @propublica.org article underscores some of the how & why. Gambling addiction is not rare and like big tobacco, back in the day, gambling platforms are creating & exploiting it.
Our reporter mimicked the betting patterns of a problem gambler for 10 weeks, consulting a panel of addiction specialists, recovering gambling addicts and professional sports bettors for advice. Here are five things he learned.
I agree with this physician's description of the recent failed execution by lethal injection. And why it should argue against any idea of a humane method of execution. There should not be statutes in an enlightened society for killing people in the 21st century. www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/unch...
This report of what was an unusual CNS fungal infection is of interest. Although the reason for the increase is still under investigation, one possibility is the ⬆️ use of immunosuppressive medications for immune-mediated diseases in GI, Rheumatology, and Dermatology.🤔 www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes...
So all this excessive worry about the adverse effects of changing clocks twice a year, can now be replaced with worrying about all the new adverse effects of permanent Daylight Saving Time. Sheesh! www.cmaj.ca/content/198/...

I remember learning in history class many years ago that one of the reasons for the collapse of ancient Rome was that Roman Senators sole purpose while in office was to enrich themselves. Are there any historians who wish to comment on that assertion?
Every one of these people view their positions in the government as an opportunity to cash in on multiple grifts while traveling the world and having a great time at our expense.
Whenever we humans confine ourselves to wondering whether there is life elsewhere in the universe, we need to consider that even on our own planet living organisms have adapted to extreme conditions we previously thought incompatible with complex life. www.the-scientist.com/a-fire-amoeb...
Such an important study given that our distant mammalian cousins, bats, are proving to be a source of known viral zoonoses and we need to understand more about their evolution.
"We showed that bats, and thus powered flight, most likely originated in Europe in the late Paleocene, refuting previous African, Asian and North American origins..." www.nature.com/articles/s41...

So why did they settle? 1. If the trial continued, it could have revealed significant evidence of wrongdoing. 2. The amount is trivial compared with their annual profits. 3. They will not have to face court-ordered changes to their algorithms. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Tariffs are paid by the people of the country imposing them, and not by countries on whom the tariffs are imposed. While it does reduce trade by limiting the purchase of products being tariffed, it is far more harmful to the imposing country. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

This quote from a piece by Hannah Arendt in @thenewyorker.bsky.social rings a bell. “…he was incapable of thinking—that is, of allowing into consciousness any reality or viewpoint inconsistent with his loyalty to his job and to his superiors. A “terrifyingly normal” product of personal ambition…”
Read the well-written opinion piece cited in this post; a brilliant example of logical thinking. Well done Alasdair.
Despite negative RCTs, I don’t think air filters are useless I think the magnitude of their likely effect was grossly oversold by many advocates - writing cheques the trials could not cash Misalignment of expectations has caused a lot of confusion

Given all the interest in air cleaning following the recent negative RCT… Here is an old post explaining why cleaning air is not comparable to cleaning water It’s a good thing to do, but we need to be realistic about what it can achieve
