One last thing to wrap out this month. Holly pitched doing a credits theme with vocals at a Halloween party. I agreed a few hours later on the condition I do it exactly how I want. We also took this photo that would be used for this stay calm poster in the game at that party.

And of course with how passive of a creature they are, they were given a nice gentle alien bellowing tone, just doing weird effects on my voice. This is also true of slug grubs. Every time you kill a slug grub, you are also killing me. Nice going you monsters.

it speaks to the level of aggressive, bad-faith and poor quality thinking on here that despite (a) never claiming and (b) outright clarifying several times in the thread, many popular posters on here are intentionally lying and saying that i think that LLMs are “sentient”.

i’m completely serious when i say that much of the dismissive ai discourse on here fires the bigotry neuron

part of the reason the deontological principle of “don’t be cruel to language models because it makes you a worse person” is salient to me is because i am a poster and i have noticed how certain types of posting affect my cognition, in good and bad ways

Try the demo when it releases on Monday. The *entire* first Episode for free, including all of this update's additions and improvements, *and* your saves will automatically carry into the full game if you decide to buy it!

It is absolutely good promotion stuff, I now have a bigger crave to get Scarlet Hollow 👁️👁️

when the new update drops on monday, you owe it to yourself to play scarlet hollow, if only so you can bear witness to the sisyphean hell we've created for ourselves how did we retroactively add half a slay the princess (70k words) to the start of a 580k-word branching behemoth? idk but we did it

As hugely popular as it became, Slay The Princess was a small side-project. THIS is Black Tabby's main game and if you liked STP, you really should check out this gothic monster. Still a good ways until it leaves early access, too,

Why haven't I been tasked with spending the night in a haunted house even ONCE in my adult life. The movies I watched growing up seemed to suggest this would be more of a thing. I wouldn't even have to be offered an inheritance or large sum of money from an eccentric millionaire to do it

Hot take: I really want a reverse mascot horror where it’s a bunch of animatronic character who are clinically depressed because they’re scary now and have to scare influencers out of dangerous abandoned building so they don’t Tucker and Dale vs Evil themselves

This is darn interesting to bring up. I do think the take was a little hotter than it needed to be; the problem is less that games get too into combat, or make it secondary to narrative. Sometimes, that's exactly what a game is trying to be and what it should be. The problem arises—

IMO one of the biggest hurdles for games as an artistic medium is their over-reliance on combat as a core mechanic. Saying this as a guy who enjoys a good combat system, but it's emotionally numbing and severely limits a game's narrative scope.

But game devs are nothing if not some of the world's best not-scientist problem solvers. I think we're up to the challenge. At the same time, I think it's fair for many games to keep the aforementioned narrative issue. Plenty of people aren't sensitive to it—

Something like Hi-Fi rush can somewhat get around this because it takes such a light tone, but it's still honestly a little jarring to straight-up kill the bosses even if we're basically just turning them into fireworks. also weird that the robots we chew through are sentient and this is—

—driven home once more with cnmn at the very end. It really is a significant challenge for game devs to tackle, having mass enemy fighting while also not hurting the plausibility of the narrative. So much so that the answer has usually been to not tackle it.

—when games try to still have a strong narrative and the combat undercuts it. As Tony says, it really hurts the impact of cutscenes trying to focus on the taking of life when they come right in-between absolute oodles and canoodles of life-taking.
