Hello There! My name is Jackson. I'm a writer and narrative designer for video games. I'll be posting updates here about the cool stuff I'm working on, interspersed with stupid opinions no-one asked for and bad attempts at comedy. 🙂

I think the amount of grief over the BioWare shutdown, despite the fact anyone who keeps up with gaming industry news saw this coming a mile away, really goes to show how much their games have affected people over the decades.

One thing I see online that REALLY pisses me off is when people opine fondly about gawker like it wasn’t a sleaze outlet that published a video of a drunk college girl possibly getting raped.

I mean, obviously peter thiel basically paying to execute a news outlet he didn’t like sucks, but to me it’s very much a “both sides suck” thing. I would argue that, even if the way it happened leaves a bad taste in the mouth, gawker ultimately got what it deserved.

One aspect of the modern job hunt I find outright sinister is these “fit assessments” they make you do now. The questions are all couched in corporate speak, but they always read to me as trying to tease out how willing I am to have my labor exploited.

Maybe I’m crazy, but I interpret “I usually do work outside my assigned duties agree/disagree” as an unspoken “will you cause problems if we try to make you work unpaid overtime”

The most important thing I think we all need to do is remember this. Remember what Microsoft and Xbox are doing to this industry right now when they try to reenter it in 10-15 years. Do not trust them, do not take their money. Do not invite the vampire across your threshold.

Man reading this is giving me heartburn. Hundreds punished for this mismanagement of others, and those who aren't cut are being told to do the impossible if they want to stay employed.

I’d love nothing more than to be wrong, but my instinct says this will end poorly. Ghost Made sense because StarCraft was a hot IP at the time. Trying to reactivate a dormant IP in a completely different genre seems like a much bigger swing than spinning off of something already successful.

Some existing StarCraft fans will pick this up, of course, but not as many as if it was an RTS. Some will actively shun the game for not being what they wanted. It all just feels like a weird self-own to me. Why make it harder to draw in the existing fan base?

The Game Writing SIG’s first monthly narrative spotlight is out! Every month I will be talking(ranting) about a different narrative-centric game. For this one I spoke with @antennasunite.bsky.social about his video game/Escape Room hybrid ScribeOS. I’ve got big plans for this series so stay tuned!

Our first-ever monthly narrative game spotlight is live on the SIG website! For our inaugural article, we spoke to ScribeOS creator Milo Duclayan about the magic circle and what game writers can learn from the LARP community. buff.ly/GnnpNyZ

Also this is a VERY SERIOUS project that was definitely NOT conceived as a convoluted scheme to give myself the ability to shill Pentiment on the Game Writing SIG website. Any claims and/or accusations of this put forward by my fellow committee members are definitely false.

Just watched the “Dax can’t date the same person as her previous host because they’re both girls” deep space nine episode, and man does it suck that all the good Star Trek shows were made when tv writers still had to maneuver around the legacy of the hays code.

I have now seen the odyssey. It was good, but the movie runs into what are by now well established and continually frustrating weak points for Nolan, taking itself too seriously at all times and dull, uninspired color palettes. 7-8/10

Everyone working or trying to work in games has a studio they dream of joining, for me that studio has always been Obsidian Entertainment. If anyone affected by the layoffs is reading this, know that Microsoft’s incompetence does not reflect on your worth, and that the work you did is treasured.

I'm very sorry to announce that I was one of the devs affected by the Obsidian layoffs today. At least for four years, it was a beautiful dream. If you need a writer with experience in everything from the fog of war to romance - especially if you're open to remote - please get in touch.

If you’re a Narrative Designer or Game Writer looking for work, check this out pronto. As far as I’m aware it’s the most comprehensive aggregator for game narrative jobs out there. (Also join the SIG discord if you want more updates on resources like this!)

The #gamewriting jobs page is now live! Whether you're currently looking for work in the field or know someone who is, we encourage you to check out the page and spread the word. We've already catalogued 189 positions, and this list will only continue to grow!

I’ll start by recommending my recent obsession: Lactonic, salty, buttery. Gentle florals and newly ripe fruits. A soft scent that lingers, like fingertips trailing over flushed skin as the sunlight trickles in through lace curtains. eleasium.world/products/birth

well, it was a fun week of pretending video games were fun, but it's time to get back to the important business of making sure no game ever gets made again

I do not think you should be allowed to complain about steam reviewers saying a game is overpriced unless you can look me in the eyes and say you would pay 15-20 dollars for angry birds with a straight face.

A lot has been said about the growing gaming hardware squeeze in the past few weeks. It’s going to suck for a few years, but I’m hopeful either the AI bubble will have burst or supply chains will have adapted by the time people’s current machines give out.

I haven’t played destiny since I was in middle school 12 years ago. While I drifted away from the franchise, I still have fond memories of exploring the solar system with my friends. To anyone who has ever worked on destiny: your time and passion were not wasted, 13 year old me can attest to that.

I have a “So it goes” approach to Bungie/Sony ending support for the game- all things inevitably end, What really gets me is the clear gross mismanagement bungie has suffered and the fact a bunch of talented, hardworking people are probably about to lose their livelihoods because of it.

this is what happens when societies secularize without building a moral foundation first. you just end up remapping religion and folklore to cg puppets

Currently wanting to sit down the people unreasonably mad about Christoper Nolan casting lupita nyong'o as Helen in the odyssey and explain they need to grow up and be unreasonably mad about the movie’s bland color palette and injection-molded armor instead.

There's a misconception that because good indie games are coming out, the indie game industry is doing well. This is absolutely not true Nobody can get funding for anything and the only way to make an indie game is to sacrifice years of your life Even then you're just one among thousands in a year

I do not understand the backhanded pretentiousness I sometimes see towards Esoteric Ebb. If you see creatives being inspired by one of the greatest RPGs ever, then striking out to build on that legacy as a negative, I legitimately have to question whether you enjoy art and/or living.

Just got off the plane. If you are one of those people who think it’s OK to lean your plane seat way back into the face of the person behind you then I think you’re a subhuman troglodyte. (Three guesses how my flight was)
