I never wanted to be a "in my day things were better" old lady... but I need to categorically state that technology actually WAS better. You are currently in the peak of designed obsolence, enshittification, personal intrusion and forced acceptance by lack of choice. Sure, the underlying tech...

pooping out of my mega burnout depression crash to remind artists that Procedural Generation (procgen) is not genAI.

Absolutely Blast Corps. Just imagine it with modern graphics, physics and sane controls!

Game Devs, If you could wave a magic wand and get the rights and money to personally remake ONE game, which one would you pick? I'd remake Eternal Darkness. And I'd add back in the cut levels.

This hasn't been a priority of any AAA studios for a long while and honestly it is you the end user who is footing the bill. The vast majority of games push your hardware through inefficiency rather than spectacle or quality. You can do a whole lot more with current pcs then you get.

Hot take re Steam Next Fest: many devs are shooting themselves in the foot by releasing a jankfest of a demo. I get that your game is not ready for release yet. BUT a demo is supposed to convince people your game is worth buying. If you just upload your nightly build or whatever, it doesn't do that.

Imagine a movie releasing a bunch of unedited footage as a trailer, with greenscreens still visible and the music and half the sound effects or voice lines screwed up, just because that's what they have right now. Wouldn't exactly inspire you to go to the theater on day one.

This rant brought to you by a game that offers "0x0" as the only resolution option and crashes when I try to click anything in the inventory as instructed by the tutorial.

I'm not talking about perfection, but stuff that sometimes is barely playable, or janky and broken to a frustrating degree. Give it some love and polish. It deserves more than people writing it off because you released the demo in a horrible state. This is people's first impression. Make it count.

If your demo plays like crap and is riddled with typos that the most basic spellcheck would catch, why should I believe that you're gonna pay more attention to quality and polish down the line? A demo is marketing, and also a product in itself that requires work and care for positive effect.

It took me 3 minutes to lodge a complain against Collective Shout for falsely identifying as a charity. I encourage other Australian Game devs to do the same.

visa and mastercard deciding what games are allowed to be sold is an apocalyptic level threat to the games industry. phone calls are the highest impact way to help. this is an all hands on deck situation. the enemy got results with 1000 phone calls. we can beat them phone numbers and a script:

If you care about games, take a moment to read through this and take action. NSFW games might not be for you - they're not for me - but we cannot allow a small group of censorious extremists to decide that people can not make games about sex, about sexuality, and about the role of sex in our world.

I know we're upset about itch, but they're not the only ones Payment processors harassed companies bc of a 1,000 email hate campaign But we can EASILY top 1,000! I prewrote an email + got the contact info - you just have to send! ↻💬♡ to boost We CAN make a difference 💕 #itch #censorship 1/🧵

This situation where payment processors get to decide what we can all play, read and watch is untenable. Doesn't matter what local laws around free speech are, what the folks running storefronts views are, a handful of companies now have the final say.
