The environmental stakes are significant, too. If data centres treble in number as the government intends, they could consume as much water each day as 60,000 homes. Yet the people and communities affected have had little say in these decisions.

Our report calls for: - Proper public consultation and meaningful community involvement. - Greater transparency over access to government and industry secondments. - Stronger environmental standards and reporting. - Action to tackle the revolving door between government and the AI industry.

Between July 2024 and June 2026: - 84% of ministerial meetings about data centres were with businesses or private-sector trade associations. - Ministers met just TWO community groups. - Ministers and senior civil servants met ZERO environmental NGOs.

Permanent secretaries and directors general held no meetings with community groups. Meanwhile, 38 ministers and senior civil servants were hired by AI companies over the same period. There has been no national public consultation on AI Growth Zones or data centres.

🎯 The EIC’s letter tells the Prime Minister that “your personal leadership is needed”. We couldn’t agree more. A culture of political integrity must come from the top. The Prime Minister has said he wants to do politics differently; taking these steps would be a clear way to prove that.

3. Political donation caps: The EIC recognises that reliance on large donations from a limited number of sources risks undue influence and damages trust in politics. The government should use the Representation of the People Bill to introduce a donation cap.

🛡️ The SRA is seeking permission to appeal. But the judgment also makes clear that it’s up to Parliament to decide whether regulators should have these powers - and put them beyond doubt, with proper safeguards for legal privilege.

𓂃🪶 The judgment turns on the wording of the legislation, but its implications are much wider. Without access to this material, the SRA faces a major gap in its ability to investigate potential wrongdoing by lawyers, including suspected anti-money laundering breaches and abusive litigation conduct.

3. The judge ruled that the legislation relied on by the SRA was not "compellingly clear" that privilege could be overridden by the SRA, and noted that it was ultimately for Parliament to decide whether it would be desirable for the legal regulator to have the power it has until now assumed.

4. This comes after London libel firm Carter-Ruck and their former client, businessman Mohamed Amersi, challenged the SRA, arguing that the legal regulator could not view legally privileged material without a waiver from the client who holds the privilege.
