My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

The point's been made by smarter people, but I think the worst AI thing is that it frames these rewarding pursuits as tasks you must want to get out of the way. Let me read/write/think this for you! No good can come from YOU doing it!

The New From The Hideout had @tonymartin.bsky.social mention Pete doing breakdown announcements late at night. Here's a genuine off-air example of such an apology.

Ident, Wide World Of Sports intro for Dunhill Nation's Cup Golf... except something happens to the satellite feed, and Pete Smith sounds like he was rushed into the booth to apologize quickly @tonymartin.bsky.social

He was also in the Quinn Martin stable of recurring guest stars. 🫡

RIP Tom Skerritt, a reliable and enduring actor who you probably remember from...everything, basically. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

I went to see my old mate Tim Key's show tonight. Several people came up and said 'this must be annoying, but can we have a selfie'. I was all gracious: 'haha, it's fine!' Actually it's more than fine. I NEED IT. PLEASE RECOGNISE ME.

Watching Oliver Clark sing the news on Sam Pang Tonight is fantastic and warming my heart. (Also Kitty Flanagan should've been hosting her own tonight show years ago, she's so effing talented.)

So yeah Aussie Bird Count starts tomorrow. But there’s nothing stopping you from starting early, and I’ve already done three counts. #AussieBirdCount

The unproduced Strange New Worlds x Doctor Who crossover Akiva Goldsman: “We really did talk to Russell for a while about crossing over the two shows. Not just, ‘Hey, wouldn't it be a fun idea,’ but how to do it. How narratively it would work. Ultimately, there were too many corporate hurdles.”

I have to admit, Shane Gillis‘s “Didn’t know women were dressing like whores at the gym“ joke in his SNL monologue really captured the comedy zeitgeist of a Funny Bone open mic night in 1985.

Having Lorne Michaels be producer of SNL in 2026 is like if they had hired someone to produce it in 1975 whose main claim to fame was a hit radio comedy from 1928.

“I felt a great disturbance in the internet, as if millions of fascist and racist voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.”

Jooooohhhh No!@josefoshea.bsky.social

What a weird world we live in - Ukraine hits a data centre deep in Russia - Irish twitter users see racist posts about IPAS centres in Offaly fall off a cliff

Last night I saw one of the best stand up shows this year, Tegan Higginbotham's Follow That Turtle! It's Dark, it's provocative, it's funny, it's Tegan! Only 5 shows to go from Wed til Sun at Theory Bar in the CBD (used to be Loop) 🤩 Get out to the last week of #MelbourneFringe

So wonderful having Denise Scott back headlining @locallaughs.bsky.social killing with a brand new bit about how shit the entertainment at the NRL Grand Final on the weekend was. And none of us at the Local are sporty, let alone NRL, but she painted the most hilarious picture for us. She was awesome

Tonight's show was Mumbo Wumbo Jumbo by Artist (painter sculpture, performance artist) The Naughty See Monkey. He paints a work while telling tales, dances (He was band Ergot Derivative's gogo dancer) & videos of his life play. It's a retrospective of his life in the scattered style of his art.

I'll disclose that I've known Naughty (not v well) for 30 years or so. He's originally from New Zealand, part of the Clan McGillicuddy Serious Party scene. New Zealand produces the best eccentric artists. Also if you see this show bring a warm coat as the venue has no heating.

If you take part in the audience participation in this show, he needs 2 brief assistants, he will paint a quick portrait of you to take home! Also one audience member gets to win the main painting. An amusing and very Fringey show.

Last night's Melbourne Fringe show was Harold Holt: The Man, The Myth. I enjoyed it but it started HALF an hour late. So I was a little late for my next show Welcome To Hell, which had a total lock out policy! No late entries at all! So be careful out there Fringe goers.

My 2nd show was Dune but Worse from AoNZ performer Sean Burnett Dugdale-Martin who sends up both film and book brilliantly. Very silly, epic production where the audience gets to play multiple characters, if they want, but don't have to. The sandworm is a suitably huge part of the show. Hilarious.

Don't bring the kids (there is some hilariously bad porn read right out of Herbert's book) but do bring some spice (ie some nutmeg or something), as he can't do the spice skit without it.

What an awesome first night #melbournefringe tonight. So excited to start with one of the best Cabaret artists in the country, Jude Perl. Jazzy piano playing & a voice to send you into the ether. She's inviting talented friends on stage and tonight was Kate K-S and their voices blended perfectly. 🤩
