Wow...someone who acknowledges the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I am a NMU grad and so happy about this! #NMU #upperpeninsula

“He's gunna go up to the Upper Peninsula and get a pretty cold welcome.” And the UP said…

Not the best photo~ this is a tiny creature caught my eye washed ashore in the surf on my walk. Blue Button aka Porpita Porpita. Looking like a tiny jelly fish but they aren't- they are a colony of smaller living organisms ( hydroids). First time seeing it in SoCal. #bluebutton #pacificocean

There is just something sinister in the Santa Ana winds. Unsettling. It’s not like any other wind. I think it lets us know that nature is way stronger than us and beware. #santaanas #wind

ERROR 404: PERFECT LIFE NOT FOUND The required existence does not appear to be available. Possible cause: unrealistic expectations Suggested action: Continue with your gloriously imperfect life. Make the most of what you've got, find joy where you can, and enjoy as much of it as possible.

This is how she won a Nobel

In 2012, I stood on a stage with Anne Carson as a volunteer grad student to help her perform BRACKO, an adaptation of Sappho, where my job was to say the word "bracket" every time there was a bracket, which was more than two hundred times

I am noticing more and more bluff failures in So Cal. This is a piece of a bluff that crumbled recently. Quite a large chunk. Looks cool in the afternoon sun... #encinitas #pacificocean

Good news from the Badlands! Today, October 6, Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation, a Lakota nonprofit based on the Pine Ridge Reservation, plans to return 50 bison to nearly 40,000 acres in the Stronghold area of Badlands National Park.

I’m with Ken on this one. As someone who studies the East African Rift System, I frequently fear that many answers to our paleoclimate/environment/evolution questions may have answers from outside the depocenters. As we say, there’s no fossil mountain goats! 🐐 🧪⚒️ www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/s...

I can not believe RFK is still in office. He is not educated about anything he is in charge of and he is killing people.

Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social

RFK Jr. thinks that getting measles is no big deal, and points to the low death rate to support this asinine opinion. Besides the fact that these deaths are preventable, he ignores hospitalizations and immune amnesia, which can erase immunity to other pathogens that people have already built up.

That's our money they stole, #ScienceSky 🧪 We have to reclaim it.

Great video! I think rattlesnakes are cool. They are vital to ecosystems especially rodent control. We’ve had quite a few near our home. I leave them alone or if necessary I have a “Rattlesnake Wrangler” that I can call and he will relocate the snake to a safer place for all of us.

Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social

I found this video after my husband stepped on the rattlesnake and there are 100 reasons to watch it, not least because this scientist made a fake leg and foot to see what rattlers do when people step on them. Spoiler alert: they rarely strike. youtu.be/s_GtpGyChlw

The Trump administration has delayed a final decision on Endangered Species Act protections for monarch butterflies, with a new deadline of June 6, 2030. Monarchs remain without protections while the decision is pending. The agency could act sooner, but this agreement allows years more of waiting. 😔

This is devastating and cruel. Heartbreaking....

They took away Medicaid from my 82 year old mom. They don't answer the phone and when she showed up in person, they refused to talk to her and told her to go home and call them. She got her low income senior housing because she qualified for Medicaid.

Every day a bit of daylight is lost, gray marine layers, cooler air, hot tea...ramps up my knitting. The yarns, the rhythm of knitting, the effects of the colors and textures of yarn, planning new projects...makes me calm and content in a world of chaos. #knitting #autumn
