Just finished: Voice-A-Versa by @billywest.bsky.social, an autobiography of the prolific voice actor and his roles. Very worth checking out for modern animation fans!
I always thought of myself as drinking way less than most people, but it turns out "like one drink a month" is basically exactly average! (I'd probably drink more if I didn't have to drive to most situations where it's an option, though.)
If you're not familiar with the alcohol consumption by decile chart, it's a real eye opening look at what being a hardcore alcoholic is like

It's getting on to witch season, if you know a young witch fan (or are a witch fan, of any age!) maybe try The Ink Witch? -Stonewall Honor book -stars a tough and brave trans girl -and a sassy tarantula -it's funny -lots of people who ought to know really liked it! bookshop.org/p/books/the-...
I still remember Nana, back in the old country, chopping the tomatoes, stirring the sauce, as we heard on the breeze the distant voice of the villagers, raised in jubilation at the news that they were bringing back Family Guy.
A definite sign of ageing is that you cannot impress me with "over 20 years" anymore. Am I expected to think this sauce is ancient, because it's as old as Nelly Furtado's Maneater?
I don't recall a specific moment of realization, but I remember watching Muppet Babies and when Gonzo self-identified as a "weirdo," I was like "oh, that's like me!"
QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?
MAYBE The Amulet of Samarkand or The School for Good and Evil, but those are both LONG for middle grade and you'd still have to expand them a lot. They just have enough interesting ideas that you could get away with it.
I am now wondering if there are *any* children’s books you could get an excellent 10 hour series out of
Just finished: Maggie the Dread by @osutein.bsky.social. A kid accidentally releases the goddess of destruction who's trapped in a giant obelisk at school, and now they both have to figure out how to stop her from unwillingly devouring the universe. Cute, charming, very wacky fun!

Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!
I just finished Quaint Folk by @bitterkarella.bsky.social! This is great trippy folk horror weirdness for you fans of creepy villages with dark secrets. A great read for the Halloween and/or Tigglestide season!
Bookshop's got free shipping for the next two days AND it's October! It's the perfect time to grab a copy of The Ink Witch! (Or Unboxing Libby, that one's about robots, it's good for all seasons.)
Anti-Prime Day starts…NOW! 🥳 Today through midnight on 10/7, enjoy free shipping site-wide, all while supporting local, independent bookstores.

It is the start of Banned Books Week and as such it's an EXCELLLLENT moment to donate to @authorsabb.bsky.social. We are laser focused on tbe single issue of fighting book bans. It's hard work, and we've done it with all volunteers for about 3 years-- and now we finally have a program manager.

oh my god, everything about this sounds amazing. The Magician's Nephew is one of the best Narnia books (just don't read it first, the modern numbering is wrong) and Jadis is the best.
EXCLUSIVE 🪩 Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is a rock inspired fantasy nodding to David Bowie and The Who. “Narnia is literally a world made out of music,” she tells Empire. “And rock ’n’ roll to me felt like a world made out of music.” Read more: www.empireonline.com/movies/news/...
I hadn't thought of it like this, but considering everything we learn about the big-picture galaxy in Dungeon Crawler Carl it's exactly right. It's like Hitchhiker's if the POV never left the set of a Vogon game show.
If you want to look to find the bit of science fiction culture of today that is likely most similar to the slot that Hitchhiker's fit into in the 80s, I might suggest Dungeon Crawler Carl to you. It's NOT a 1:1 fit, so settle down, but for humor/absurdity/weird melancholy, it's in the neighborhood.
I always forget to do this, but if you're following me and don't know, I have a couple books out for middle grade readers, Unboxing Libby and The Ink Witch (I think they're fun for adults, too, though.) I'm really proud of both of them, and The Ink Witch got a Stonewall Honor award!
I am not first and will be far from the last to say this: I have purchased so many books because I saw them recommended or publicized here on bsky. I cannot urge you all enough to KEEP TALKING ABOUT BOOKS. I know it's easier to talk up someone else's book, but this also means you, the shy author.
Until the internet I never knew that there were people who took this to just mean Ralph literally dreams about being a Viking. I get what they mean and that it's "simpler," but the fact that the other interpretation intuitively unfolds a whole backstory is what makes it funny!
Oh wow I went looking for the clip so I could explain it and stumbled on a Reddit post about the whole controversy. Basically there’s a “Simpsons” line where Ralph Wiggum says “oh boy! Sleep! That’s when I’m a Viking!” And…
I had to look up what this is and... it's a flip phone, but side-to-side instead of up and down? Which is...desirable, I guess? It doesn't make the world actively worse, so I guess I gotta count that as a tech win by today's standards!
For anyone thinking about buying a $2000 foldy phone, know that we've had those in Korea for years. You can only open it a certain number of times before it breaks forever, and on a new model that number is going to be very low.
You can go back to a lot of SNES games and they're still beautiful and playable by today's standards. N64...mostly not so much. The appeal was HEAVILY based on 3D, any 3D, being novel and cool.
The original’s one of those things where it’s like…we need to accept that nothing on n64 “looked good”. Absolutely everything on that system looked and ran like shit. Now, art direction helped! And OoT’s was quite good, which helps! But it looks and runs, and I cannot stress this enough, like shit
This store makes some amazing stuff and it would be a shame if they closed; if you're looking for some really awesome clothes, check them out!

Awesome! I just got this yesterday and it's the one I'll be using from now on. I've been surprised how often there's a perfectly good alternative to these seeming monopolies (and usually better, because they can't coast on being the default.) I went Linux too and it's SO MUCH BETTER.
NEW: MapQuest is currently the number one navigation app on the Apple App Store, overtaking Google Maps thanks to Google's decision to follow Trump's lead in renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America.
