Classical Music - Books - Teaching BM-Rice (‘06), MM-SFCM (‘08) I did some mining of academian ore, but Lord Chaos held something else in store; I was vomited from a beast’s belly onto the shore. But this is no firmament. Where am I?

Doesn’t seem hard to say, “that’s not a thing the Supreme Court does, Mr. President.” They’re members of the bar… wtf are they having a civil war over? It’s a no-brainer! How many of the partners are total lunatics?

“Sullivan & Cromwell, a multinational legal powerhouse headquartered in New York City, is helping the 80-year-old president prepare a request for the Supreme Court to review an earlier ruling on a lawsuit brought against him by E. Jean Carroll, 82, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Bless the Gainesville city planners who laid us on a 4-quadrant numbered grid system and said Streets run N-S and Avenues run E-W.

The illustration of the synagogue in Kaifeng took my breath away. What a tragic loss. I wonder what the relationship between the rise of the pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe and the collapse of Chinese Jewry was, if anything.

Just came across this: "The Kaifeng Torah Scroll: a British Library treasure" www.bl.uk/stories/blog...

Wow. Fabulous mini lecture.

I don't know anything about womenswear, but I stumbled upon Caleigh O'Donnell's Instagram last year and find her content to be very thoughtful and substantive. Goes beyond "here's how to look cool" or "everyone needs this" cliches. Many frameworks can be applied to menswear. IG itscalbal

Reading the comments, it seems like people have no idea how much things cost.

Just started the new Helen DeWitt and she continues to be delightfully strange. She’s one of those writers like DFW where you just know she’s crazy-smart on top of being a great writer.

Indeed, as far as punishments go, “you are no longer a senator” is pretty minor. It’s a substantial loss of honor, but that’s his own fault.

Holzman-Tweed (he-suite)@holzman-tweed.bsky.social

Periodic reminder that Al Franken had at least 8 accusers and that he stepped down the day they were going to begin the investigation he initially demanded. "What happened to Al Franken" is exactly the bare minimum that should have happened to Al Franken.

When an explicitly pro Palestine group refers to a previous day’s massacre as an “unprecedented liberation struggle, the Al-Aqsa Flood”… and says, “We stand with the Palestinian people.“ I dunno… I imagine there was a lot of cheering, nastiness, and antisemitism at that particular event.

But I think acknowledging that the Palestinian coalition, like any political coalition, is diverse in its viewpoints but unified in its knowledge of the intense suffering of Palestinians, its desire for the freedom of Palestine… Like, I’m pro-Palestine but I wouldn’t have gone to that rall. But…

but I don’t think that attendance at that rally is disqualifying. Much less disqualifying than, for example, a Nazi tattoo. If all they’ve got about her is that she attended a rally, hopefully she will have something intelligent to say about that choice.

Carter sold his farm and Hoover (also mentioned) sold his mining interests. I think Cramer knows it too. The smile on his face is the smile of a liar enjoying his lie.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Sen. Cramer endorses Trump making billions on crypto schemes while in office: "If we punished every POTUS who was successful at something & said they can't legislate, if they were a farmer like Jimmy Carter they can't sign a farm bill? There are lots of potential conflicts, but it's all about Trump"

I thought Ezra Klein’s show this week on Israel/Palestine was fascinating. I felt like it recognized the realities on the ground better than basically any discussion I’ve ever heard. The proposed solution was like nothing I’d ever seen described before, but I found it extremely appealing.

Something BlueSky never mentions when they’re blaming the “pod bros” for Platner is that there is a Pod Bro running for office, and it’s Abdul al-Sayed. He literally hosted one of their shows and is a friend of theirs. But he’s progressive so it doesn’t fit the narrative.

Again… it’s not that no one can change, it’s that obviously shitty people shouldn’t be made Senator of the USA.

Francesca Fiorentini@franifio.bsky.social

I'm excited to be dragged into the pit of no return by the hogs on Bluesky for believing people make mistakes and can change. The SA allegations are awful. Please crucify me.

In that I look at both of them and say, “This isn’t funny and cool, why do so many people like this? Obviously, a fair number of people enjoying this are just straight up racist.”

Can someone point me to the pro-Platner Favreau content? Is it on Twitter? I listen to Pod Save and at no point have they pushed Platner, but everyone here acts like they created his candidacy.

Just, lol at this bullshit.

Ryan Grim@ryangrim.bsky.social

I gather that everyone here is 100% certain Graham Platner is a Nazi antisemite. I also gather you all are trapped in an epistemic chamber sealed tighter than the one around Fox News. So, who here actually knew that Platner’s wife is Jewish? And how does that influence your certainty?

How’s this straw man lookin today?

Seth Abramson@sethabramson.bsky.social

For example, whatever you may think about why a drunk college-age Platner got an offensive tattoo alongside other drunk service members in Croatia in 2007, *absolutely everyone who has dealt with him since confirms his ardent opposition to Nazism has been unwavering for decades*.

What a great article not only on faculty workloads, but how little our salaries actually factor in to most university budgets. A few highlights. First, our salaries are falling:

browsing an absolutely wonderful anthology of Akkadian literature, and I find, as ever, the universality of human experience so moving. a 4,000 year old incantation baked into clay, intended to help ease a difficult birth - "bring out the sealed one ... let him come out and see the light!"

If he’s just saying, “Fuck the twitter-tankies,” I guess I’m with him. Weird way to say it though.

If the message from some of you here is "it's okay to be Stalinists because our opponents are Nazis," be ready for the possibility that - given that choice - people will choose Nazis.
