Hours after my reporting, @wfaach8.bsky.social reports Chris Hilton is the lawyer representing Texas Transgender Student Union, the anonymous LLC that sent the transgender mailers to Texans. WFAA also reports Hilton said disclosing the identity of who created them would "cause harm." No citation :(

The race between Ken Paxton and James Talarico remains nail-bitingly close, and the GOP and their surrogates are trying everything to take down Talarico. New today, @stevanzetti.bsky.social investigates attempts at an "October Surprise," including the anti-transgender mailers flooding into Texas.

Is it normal for an anonymous Wyoming LLC that sent mass mailers impersonating a transgender advocacy group to hire the lawyer who defended TX Attorney General Ken Paxton from impeachment in response to a court filing seeking to depose people who could unmask the LLC's owners

NEW: Transgender Texas Student Union has retained counsel in response to the Travis County filing related to the fake transgender mailers. It's Chris Hilton, who previously worked for Ken Paxton at the Texas Attorney General's office and left temporarily to defend Paxton in his impeachment trial.

Incidentally, Chris Hilton is the lawyer who represents Elon Musk in his defamation lawsuit against Media Matters. Musk is the single largest political donor to Paxton and has repeatedly attacked Talarico on the transgender issue in recent weeks.

Thread 🧵: the fraudulent transgender mailers have a connection back to Dallas, Texas, where a local Republican megadonor used a similar playbook years ago when he funded a fake BLM group to send letters to wealthy white parents that were designed to discredit the BLM movement.

CBS identified Illinois based Three Z Printing as the holder of the permit associated with the fake transgender mailers. One of the owners, Matt Zerrusen, is based in Dallas. His Instagram shows pictures with Charlie Kirk and Donald Trump, and comments from local Republicans.

Exactly who is behind the mailers is still uncertain. But what we can say for certain is that they were done in bad faith and follow a familiar playbook that has been well documented.

Small update re: the Texas Transgender Student Union mailers. Snailworks, the company that provided mail tracking services for the mailers, denies sending them but will not disclose who hired them. The NRCC spent $4,677 on Snailworks on 8/27/26. TTSU was created days later.

An NRCC spokesperson told me that they have nothing to do with this. "It would be a violation of federal law for us to do and not have a disclaimer on it, and the amount of money you listed of us paying them on that date is definitely not worth enough to break the law."

I can find no record of Snailworks being paid by a candidate or PAC in Texas campaign finance disclosures. In federal filings, the only group to spend money on Snailworks this year is the NRCC, amounting to more than $57k. Since 2020, only one other candidate has used Snailworks.
