Milwaukeean by birth, Kiwi by choice, progressive always. Believer in the power of the editorial cartoon. I used to chef. Now I hang out with my wife, play punk rock guitar, umpire New Zealand baseball, and play with my deaf dog.

It's disheartening to see the largest publications in the nation not cite original reporting from independent/individual reporters. Not one mention of @marisakabas.bsky.social's work in ID'ing Tommy. Instead, the WSJ implies that Tommy came forward himself. Disingenuous, at best.

NEW How an Abdul El-Sayed Opponent Handed Him a Campaign Highlight A young man named Tommy challenged the Senate candidate about the Muslim Brotherhood. The exchange went viral. Full Story: on.wsj.com/4i2ASWs

It’s been quite some time since I’ve been able to use public transport, and I forgot how much I enjoy it. Faster, cheaper, easier than driving. Build more of this instead of roads. #NZPol

Good lord. You could tell me this photo was AI generated by a malign actor trying to smear Mace, and I would believe you without question.

Charlotte Clymer@charlotteclymer.bsky.social

Something is up with Nancy Mace. Yes, I despise her and the downfall is very much earned, etc., but I don't mean that. I mean that we've reached the point in which something medically-related is clearly amiss. This is not me joking. I'm being quite serious. She is not well.

Here's what really burns my toast. I play music in small venues that are hurting. Some are closing. These shiny stadium gigs are fine if they make financial success organically. This crap does nothing for the local music scene; it actually harms it by taking that $ away from Kiwi artists. 1/2 #NZPol

It would be one thing if the economy was good and small venues could live on their own right now. Rising tide and all that. But that's not the case. Folks can't afford to go out as much. So why not help more places that host $10, $15, $20 shows instead of the $200 gigs most can't afford anyway? 2/2

In the late '80s I was Night Editor at The Minnesota Daily. Me and one other guy, sometime between 10pm and 2am, read and checked every word of the newspaper before the negatives were shot, plates were made, and the paper went to the printer. This was a COLLEGE NEWSPAPER. Not hard.

Gillian Brockell@gillianbrockell.com

looking forward to a @mattdpearce.com breakdown of how the hell his former employer published this. Like yes, AI was probably involved. But who *wasn't* involved is more alarming. Like a copyeditor, for starters. And apparently they don't have a weekend editor? This has been up for 20 hours!

Maybe a little artificial personality is in order.

60 Minutes@60minutes.bsky.social

New correspondent Ross Douthat says "no story looms larger than the latest developments in artificial intelligence." The technology and its impacts will be a major focus of 60 Minutes reporting.

I pretty much never say this because I think it's a dumb (with a B) and tired phrase, but I really want to wipe that fucking grin off his fucking face.

This was my Little Buddy’s school lunch today (it’s pizza bread in case you can’t tell from looking at it). He says it tasted as gross as it looks; one bite and it went in the bin. Please ask David Seymour if $3.50 each is a good deal if most of the lunches wind up in the compost. #NZPol

Moved to New Zealand, bought a tiny house and retired early, took up punk rock guitar, became a baseball umpire (in NZ). That’s pretty much it.

What are you doing with your midlife existential crisis? No wrong answers. Just trying to see something, as the kids say.

This is the best the USPS can do on a package going from Kentucky to New Zealand — 6 days after they received it. Sorry if I don’t trust them to properly implement this rushed and crazy mail-in ballot procedure.

Marc Elias@marcelias.bsky.social

The Justice Department’s (DOJ) various court filings defending the U.S. Postal Service’s (USPS) new voting restrictions remain mum on when important components of the rule necessary to comply will become available, even as states start sending out ballots. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

Please, Republicans... turn your little midterm convention into a celebration of the worst president in American history...please. #Trumpapalooza #Trump #MAGA

Here's the thing. Folks are forever trying to divine motives, strategy, cogent thought, etc, from Trumps words and actions. The reality, though, is there's not any of that. He's just genuinely dumb as a box of rocks and only concerned for himself.

Kai Ryssdal@kairyssdal.bsky.social

I keep telling you…he just doesn’t understand how the economy works.

This is what I get on Apple Maps right now when I search for both Lake Ontario and Lake America here in Auckland. Maybe they've only changed it in the District of Columbia. @oliverdarcy.bsky.social @status.news

Brett LoGiurato@brettlogiurato.bsky.social

Apple renamed Lake Ontario "Lake America" on Maps to comply with Trump's executive order. One person tells @oliverdarcy.bsky.social that "there is not a soul who is for it" inside the company. www.status.news/p/apple-maps...

This, apparently, is the find out part. And not for nothing, how does Milo get sent home to the UK and not the Central African Republic? (JK, that’s rhetorical.)

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

No fucking shit buddy. This is what we were trying to tell you.

Jesus Christ. Did John Waters direct this shoot?

Ron Filipkowski@ronfilipkowski.bsky.social

The look you have when, rather than conduct a decent interview of the president on serious issues, you decide to spend the entire time kissing his ass because you want to be press secretary but you aren’t “central casting.”

One of the things I genuinely love about living here is the colourful language Kiwis use. For example, the word "cunt" is acceptable in many cases where it would not be elsewhere. Like here, for example. #NZPol

Elon Musk commanding his AI chatbot to be "a little vulgar, longer, and wittier" while insulting another human is so on the nose that it seems like it could have been AI generated. The circle of life, I guess.

Lora Kolodny@lorak.bsky.social

Elon Musk is using his company's AI chatbot, Grok, to attack Billie Eilish for living in a society, I guess.
