Please join us for our next NYSC research seminar where we will be joined by David Farrugia (Deakin University), Brendan Churchill (University of Melbourne) and Stephanie Patouras (Deakin University) to present their work on “Youth Side-Hustles: Entrepreneurship and Employment in Enterprise Culture”

I am a few chapters in to this, it really does conceptualise well some of the things coming up in our fintech and financial practice interviews

THE CHEATED PLAYER: The core of the argument in my new book is fairly simple. Over the last 50 years of neoliberal financialized capitalism, individuals have been tasked with recasting ourselves as competitive speculative players, striving to make the most judicious investments in a merciless game.

🧵The wealthy and their strategists at rightwing media orgs and junktanks inflict DARVO on us. If we discuss inequality, we’re accused of perpetrating class war. In fact, neoliberalism is almost a century of class war against “the tyranny of democracy” 🙄 #Auspol theshot.net.au/uncategorize...

This girl I used to waitress with in Austin, we moved to New York together in 2003 on a literal Greyhound bus. Shared a fifth floor walk-up studio that, when it rained, had more leaks in the ceiling than we had pots and pans. We used to get drunk and smoke off the fire escape and do “sad-offs.”

I could weep, seriously. Some of the places I love best are those second-hand book stores in the side streets of small towns. Where the stacks contain surprises that shape how one thinks about something. Now LLMs need “pre 2022” texts to avoid the “contamination” of synthetic data 1/

A book seller told 404 Media that, normally, on a good week, he’d sell about 20 books. Since April, he has regularly sold hundreds of books a week. While the seller didn’t have clear evidence that the purchases were being made by AI companies, the purchases made him suspect that they were.

Here’s a video from the same podcast as linked in my previous post where you can hear the audio too. I love this because it really lays bare how LLMs fool us - but really they’re just slotting words into linguistic patterns that we’re familiar with. Genres like a podcast or LinkedIn post.

It's finally out! After what could only be described as a very long gestation, our edited collection is now available. It will be great for teaching about the concept of subculture and also contains interesting contemporary examples and research case studies. 1/2

A factor in this triumphant return is how platforms (Spotify) dissolve historical time, with the effect that a) nobody needs to remember that this was a band whose 'good' patch lasted circa 18 months and b) they provide the backdrop for inter-generational bonding

Oasis stadium jaunt ends (for now), it has been odd seeing how massively they’re loved, and also odd that it is seen as churlish to critique it. For me, they inescapably represent the worst of the 90s, the banterous homophobia, the conservatism. It made life miserable & I struggle to get over that.
