I kid you not, one woman just out of the blue said to me “isn’t it nice to be in a place where we all like each other?” Obama still reminds many of a time when a certain civility (real or imagined) existed.

this question is v1 v2 will fix the category wording, add & remove tens of grocery stores, and I’ll ask you to guess which grocery store chain is available in walking distance to more people grouped by housing category

I'm calculating the walking distance between every Chicago property and its nearest three grocery stores which residential type has the highest proportion of its properties within a 10-minute walk to a grocery store? A. Single-family houses B. Condos C. 2-to-6 flats

here's a sample of improvements coming in v3, using safety + comfort/stress evaluations the Target is 5m closer than the Trader Joe's, but the walk to TJ's has less walking along busy streets, fewer pedestrian injuries reported, more small businesses to walk past, and fewer gaps between buildings.

notice that hexagon, that's from the H3 system, which makes this analysis doable on my itty bitty laptop H3 created 120,508 tiles in Cook County, and each one was measured to the 981 grocery stores creating 118.2 million tile-store pairs of those, 351,956 walks were analyzed for comfort + safety

that's a neat idea. it looks like the bigger the building the closer it is to a grocery store (in walking distance) and walking times are longest in the South side of Chicago

Star:Line Chicago@starlinechicago.bsky.social

Concept: for each housing classification, an average walk time to the nearest grocery store, and you could even break it up by North/West/South Side

the above data is from v2, which does not include the stress score because that needs more refinement v2's improvement over v1 was the... - addition of 63 grocery stores - removal of 18 closed grocery stores and businesses that are unlikely grocery stores

Chicago has been making strides to accommodate more homes. But zoning changes could accelerate construction. We estimate that reforms legalizing small apartment buildings & enabling high densities near all transit stations could add ~10,000 additional units compared to baseline by 2041.

another Leipzig City Tunnel photo (these stations look deep but they seem average compared to many metros)

I combined all of my stamps at Sushi Plus yesterday: I got: - two $5 off prizes from the stamp card - I got to spin the wheel and get $25 off - I got three gifts (two of the sodas, and the soy sauce)

This is way better than any rewards I’ve accumulated at a couple of restaurants via Toast and Square

How insane is it that we have essentially a junkyard operating right in the middle of downtown for years now? I'm sure other lots downtown have abandoned cars in them too but this one is especially abominable.

TIL that Baltimore has a non-contiguous TIF district, comprising 4,861 properties (at the moment) the increase in property value from rehabbed and sold properties in the TIF district indirectly funds rehabbing the other properties

I wonder how many big businesses in Chicago have their AWS/GCP/Azure billing addresses in the city

Like, if the personal property lease transaction tax goes up 33% how many businesses will change their billing address?
