I worked in this building for about five years before it was sold. I once mistakenly entered the fifth floor and couldn’t quite believe that I saw a dance floor 😳

ophira@ophiraophira.bsky.social

The CIS had everything across 25 floors. You could eat for free at the giant basement canteen or the plush upper-level executive restaurant; exercise in the basement sports & social club; socialise on the 5th-floor dance hall, and maybe get frisky with a colleague in the infamous 4th-floor toilets.

That ain’t Derek Redmond, he hasn’t hurt his hamstring, lane numbers are nonsense, the stadium isn’t fit to host the Olympics. Modern AI is so powerful 😎

Better hope it’s not too windy in Scotland… where we’ve loads of *wind* farms.

Oh, great 🙄 “windfarms in Scotland are paid to turn off because there is not enough high-voltage cabling connecting the country to areas of growing electricity demand further south” www.theguardian.com/business/202...

In Manchester this week a church was demolished by the council. So were the windows. It is very easy to remove stained glass windows. Costs - a cherry picker and two/three people a day or two. Would they demolish a museum with artefacts in place, a gallery with paintings on the wall? #stainedglass

Monetised conspiracism is a neat description for huge problem. It shouldn’t be legal.

Peter Walker@peterwalker99.bsky.social

As an add to Tuesday's Portsmouth 'young men of cricket-playing age' farrago, I was sent a recording of two live feeds from the hotel filmed by activists/vigilantes, and they are fascinating in what they show about this weird and aggressive sort of monetised conspiracism. A few thoughts:

Of the 1,601,645 that live in Lancashire, the 754 refugees being housed equates to 0.047% of the total. Four out of five of them, 80%, are Afghans who assisted British military operations in their home country. Also, Lancashire council don't pay for it, the Home Office does. Performative politics

'On top of the hill.' (1901) Károly Ferenczy played a fundamental role in creating a genuinely modern Hungarian school of painting. His importance lies in the way he absorbed several European tendencies and transformed them into something individual.

I could be wrong, but I don’t remember so many polls being done about who would win a general election if it were held tomorrow at any other point when it was four years out from a GE ? Who is commissioning these polls? What is their purpose? Justification for wall to wall Farage coverage maybe?

'Japanese Lanterns.' (1930) During the interwar years, Eric Slater borrowed motifs from the Ukiyo-e masters of woodblock printing Hokusai and Hiroshige, and finessed them for his own means; the final flowering of a tradition of British printmaking until a revival in the 1980s.

Saw this and looked around. Wondering why #bbcnews choose to believe whatever local councils tell them. BBC: "Do you allow pavement parking?" Stockport: "No." Also Stockport: 🧵

I wfh. It’s a south facing room in a 130 year old house with poor insulation. Stopping the sun hitting the window keeps the room 4-5 degrees cooler. Keeping it in place (here with bamboo) makes a big difference too. I cannot recommend this enough. Zero cost, some time figuring it all out.

Driving 1000km a weekend in any vehicle sounds pretty bad tbh 💤

Sydney EV@sydneyev.bsky.social

After a weekend of driving over 1000km in a combustion vehicle. I am amazed at how so many think that’s its better than an EV! Even without the near $500 fuel bill! So sluggish. So vibration, so smell. And the pitiful performance !

"A student’s essay on Macbeth has no value as a product. It’s what you learned in the reading and writing that created it – the swiftness and resilience and suppleness of thinking you built, along with the knowledge gained of a literary marvel, of something unsummarisable – that was the point"
