Includes extra details to what I wrote about in Hot Air including the Russian prostitutes. 21centuryweather.org.au/totally-cook...

Two extraordinary charts from today’s PISA test results: 1) School test scores continue to collapse internationally, underscoring how this is no longer a Covid effect but sustained decline. Those falls in reading and maths are equivalent to about two years of lost schooling.

Just read Togetherness by @rowhoop.bsky.social (in two days). Really enjoyable, informative and profound, including for my thinking about the climate crisis: "We are symbiotic creatures at the deepest levels of our cells, living in a world entirely shaped and powered by symbiotic processes".

You don't really get the full picture of the walking stick incident until you watch both angles at the same time... (Left via @climate_resist , right via Franceinfo on TikTok) First full speed, then slo-mo and annotated.

I’ve had a fabulous time in gorgeous weather hiking the 4-day Kesch trek from hut to hut in Switzerland - the Swiss mountains are my happy place - but I grieve for the disappearing ice seen here from the Kesch hut. The glaciers are disappearing thanks to our fossil fuel emissions.

In the very week that after a long deep dive rabbit hole (books/podcasts/counselling) I discover at age 64 that I have an ADHD brain and that awareness explains and helps me a whole lot, Channel 4 do a whole documentary to supposedly demonstrate it's all a myth and I'm a fraud.

Bravo to the @smclondon.bsky.social for once again stepping up and providing evidence-based scientifically informed commentary on a societally important topic that is being mis-represented in the media. I find the comments from Dr Rachel Moseley particularly insightful and informative.

Past greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from burning fossil fuels, means that peak temperatures in the UK today are hotter (by around 3°C) than they would otherwise have been. Future burning of fossil fuels means heatwave temperatures will get hotter and hotter until we reach net-zero emissions.

Temperatures have now provisionally exceeded 37°C 🌡️ Before 2026, the UK had recorded 37°C or higher on only six occasions. This year alone, we've already reached that mark three times.

European summers aren't what they used to be! Grey curve is the climate of 1950-90. Every coloured line is a summer since 1991. Every one since 2005 sits beyond the 95th percentile of the curve. This isn't a shifting #climate. It's already a new one! 🤯🥵 Plot inspired by Barriopedro et al. 2011

I had a great weekend at Womad where I experienced the extraordinary talent and "fierce political anger" from powerful female musicians including Daniela Mercury from Brazil, Kankawa Nagarra from Australia, Oumou Sangare from Mali and Ganna from Ukraine. www.theguardian.com/culture/2026...

theguardian.comWomad festival review – hugely welcome return of joyous planet-spanning music festIn a new home after a year off, there’s a thread of fierce political anger running alongside the spirited musical performances – including standout sets from Barrington Levy and Daniela Mercury

Yet again tonight's BBC coverage of drought and fires fails to mention cause. News At Ten reporting by Justin Rowlatt omits to say the words "due to burning of fossil fuels". Continued refusal of BBC to call out cause of climate change is why we wrote to editors pressgazette.co.uk/news/climate...

pressgazette.co.ukClimate scientists say news coverage ignores cause of UK heatwaveConnection between greenhouse emissions and extreme heat in UK 'indisputable'.

The response from the BBC to our letter that they have been "highlighting the role of climate change in extreme weather" shows they have missed the point, deliberately or otherwise: it's their editorial line to omit the link between climate change and fossil fuel burning that's the issue.

"The average hottest day of the year has warmed by over 4.5°C in a swathe from Kent to Lincolnshire for the most recent decade, 2016-2025, compared to 1961-1990" From the State of the UK Climate in 2025, first published yesterday.

A good informed response to people who say 1976 was worse but we all coped fine back then (as somebody said to me at the weekend).

Comparing the UK heatwaves of June 1976 and June 2026... Daytime maximum & night minimum temperatures were much hotter in 2026. Details: maxima over 21st-30th June in both years. Uses provisional 2026 HadUK-Grid data from Met Office NCIC. Note the difference scale is larger for night minimums.

So, people of Reading, did you struggle to sleep last night? It was the warmest night on record for the town. The minimum (20.9°C) was warmer than typical June daytime maximum temperatures. Burning fossil fuels has made this heatwave hotter than it would have been without those emissions.

We regret that our event on Extreme Heat: Improving governance and strengthening action around the world has been cancelled due to the red extreme heat warning issued by the UK Met Office. Our apologies to everyone who was planning to attend the event.

We told you these heatwaves were coming but ghg emssions not yet going down (Stott et al, Nature , 2004 showing 2003 heat as regular occurrence). We're now saying West Antarctic ice sheet in imminent peril and huge irreversible sea level rise would result: would be good idea to listen this time.

Fantastic memories of them filming A Very Peculiar Practice in my halls of residence at Birmingham uni, being allowed to stay in our room while Peter Davison (in pjs) filmed in the corridor - and being told to be quiet as we made too much noise - and chatting to the nuns in a stairwell!

For the first time ever, heat pumps outsold gas boilers in Germany in 2025. 48% of all new heating systems installed last year were heat pumps. Gas fell to just 39%. A decade ago, heat pumps had a 7% market share. The transformation has been remarkable.
