My 10-year-old just burst into my office to inform me that the Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy nor Roman nor an Empire. Thanks, little Voltaire.

I've studied the great works of political theory for over half my life, yet the most important insights for our times can be gained from Scorsese films. Like this one: The bully who demands loyalty on the grounds that only he can protect you sees your loyalty as your weakness

If I'm being completely honest, I probably think of Grice's Maxims at least two times a week. Most often it's when formulating a reply online and realizing that just saying 'be relevant' or 'be informative" is not going to actually help the discussion be relevant or informative.

A Saturday night tradition, now with even more to dream about 💜 Hockey Night in Canada is back December 5 as the 2026 Walter Cup Champion Montréal Victoire host PWHL Hamilton at 7 PM ET!

If realizing that MnDOT has only been around for 50 years makes you feel old; you should really schedule your periodic colon cancer screening.

Happy 50th anniversary to MnDOT! Fifty years of moving Minnesota safely and efficiently. From roads and bridges to transit, rail and ports, we’ve strengthened Minnesota’s transportation system together. Thank you to every employee, partner and community who’s helped us keep Minnesota moving.

Not sure which is weirder for me, either uttering "Roblox-specific domain knowledge" for the first time in my life or the realization that I'm definitely not the first person to use that phrase in a sentence.

It's another windows open night and I'm reminded by the chorus of frogs that I live less than a block from a (hidden) creek. Close the windows or anytime in the day, no sign of it at all. Outside at night in the summer? Frog central. Just another quirk of urban wildlife.

This is a remarkably local story for the AP. Oh - "This story was originally published by Sahan Journal and distributed through a partnership with The Associated Press." (seriously folks - support local independent journalism)

A Chicago-based social enterprise company is purchasing the Hawthorn Crossings strip mall in north Minneapolis, promising it will build local wealth and support community development in one of the Twin Cities' lowest-income and most diverse neighborhoods.

"recoiled in horror" feels like an understatement. Satellite imagery needs to be trustworthy, and digital manipulation puts that at risk. Google setting the disinfo machine to Easy Mode is on the far edge of a spectrum, but it's still a spectrum and right now we aren't at the opposite edge of it.

Update: Journalists, human rights advocates and open source analysts recoiled in horror at the initial decision: "The opportunities for abuse and disinfo are literally boundless," said one.

I had to pull the transcript for this because, I, legit, thought the guy from Hasbro called it "Play-Doh-Win".

While drivers feel pain at the pump, some state budgets are experiencing a needed windfall. Plus: line dancing, Labubus, and the AI bubble. Today on Marketplace.

The quote: “We are no longer exclusively focused on offering products to children,” said Brian Baker, a senior vice president at Hasbro, which recently released Blooms by Play-Doh, a floral arrangement modeling kit for adults. “Our play-to-win strategy, you know, one of the key tenets is aging up.”

These "we have made an AI so powerful" warnings are straight-up advertisements, btw. No different than "we have made an Oreo so delicious all other snack artists must relent."

Why are so many newsrooms embracing membership? This week's Stage Talk explores one of journalism's biggest shifts: why membership is replacing traditional funding models for many publishers, what it means for audiences, and why we're adopting it too. discord.gg/a9TVpY8R6?ev...

For my own future reference and yours: NOBODY will cover stolen ebikes unless you get dedicated ebike insurance. Homeowners and renters insurance and AMEX Purchase Protection all consider them motorized vehicles and exclude them from coverage. Learn from my mistakes: GET DEDICATED EBIKE INSURANCE

My brand new ebike got stolen by somebody breaking into my garage and I’m beside myself. I’m not sure my insurance will cover it and I can’t afford to replace it and I’m just so sad

When the joke is so good you scroll back to like it after you finally get the joke.

When I see someone driving a Prelude I always wonder about their next car

I'm not saying this helicopter pilot doesn't know what they're doing; but to circle a hospital with a Level 1 trauma center, that has 2-4 inbound air medical transports per day... is a choice.

An extra nice thing about locking the cool air in the house during the day and opening windows at night to cool things back down: At night the house smells like lilacs because they're blooming all over the neighborhood.
