I'm putting a lot of care into the boss fights of Owlet's Embrace. Here's a preview of what's to come. Will you take on the challenge? #playdate #metroidvania #gamedev

Season buddies!

@play.date Season 3 is off to an amazing start with two very different but equally impressive games - Soggy Froggy and Gloom Gate. I never thought I'd give a frog a bath nor did I think I would play a 1-bit Soulslike, but here we are thanks to the magic of Playdate!

After two more afternoons of tinkering I fully fixed it! I hope I won't have to repair a CRT ever again.

You could play retro games with an emulator and a CRT filter... ...or you can get a CRT, find out that major caps went bad, spend days doing a full recap and hope it won't blow up afterwards. Fingers crossed! Standing on the shoulders of giants who uploaded ancient scanned manuals to archive org.

So I guess I learned a ton about CRTs, how to discharge them (scary!) and actually learning to understand electrical diagrams and notations. And then, finally, I may be able to play old games and watch movies on it like they were meant to be. But maybe it's only about the journey to get there.

I just had to give Mina the Hollower a try because it's been praised so much. Yeah, it really is that good. I can't stop playing, help me.

Oh, you've made a video game? And you want people to play it? Well, let's talk about how to do that better. How, exactly, can you make sure people care about your game and want to tell other people about it? Check it out here: docseuss.medium.com/its-not-enou...

This is your LAST CHANCE to play Big Walk early! We've just opened up 4 FINAL weeks of our Big Walk Preview!! Come to the Panic office, bring some friends, and play an hour of Big Walk. It's very fun. Book now: forms.panic.com/big-walk-pre... Here's a special behind-the-scenes peek at the room:

Remaking OOT is probably a way to probe how people respond to the classic Zelda formula nowadays, as Nintendo needs a new direction for their next 3D main title. There's an entire generation out there who only played the more sandbox style games BOTW, TOTK, Echoes of Wisdom.

I was really looking forward to Valve's new controller. Unfortunately it needs Steam or a 3rd party application to work with anything outside of Steam on Windows i.e. no working controller input in any non-Steam game out of the box. Really bummed out about that one.

People making new games for ancient consoles, today? People are seeking those consoles and games out, even younger people who didn't grow up with them. Dreamcast? N64? C64, given its brand new hardware production? Why? You can't brush it off as simple nostalgia. There's more to it.

In these times of exploding hardware costs (ram, gpus), software and game complexity I could genuinely imagine a strong counter movement. Low tech hardware would be more accessible and affordable; games would have to get simpler to match the new constraints; production budgets falling again etc.

Turning very basic things into upgrades or purchasable items in metroidvanias: Map pins, position on the map, walking faster, homing coins. They can be neatly used as yet another reward for the player, but how far is too far? Sometimes I'm surprised that they even let me walk left and right.

A slower paced section to change things up. Testing the limits of the grappling hook a bit (and apparantly the amount of relevant space I can fit into view, too)

Lovely blog post. Just messing around with my own computer back then was so important to me in hindsight. Learning to learn, and figuring out what I wanted to do in the future in the first place. No, not consuming, but mostly creating: Trying tools, making bad art, making bad programs, finding out.

"Nobody starts in the right place. You don’t begin with the correct tool and work sensibly within its constraints until you organically graduate to a more capable one. That is not how obsession works." samhenri.gold/blog/2026031...

Important to note that this goes for anything, not just computers (instruments, wood working tools, ...). Just getting the hands on it and getting to work. Entry level tools will do.

Take me down to the Parallax city where the far moves slow and the near moves quickly

Played some diablo 2 with friends (non-resurrected). Something about that game is just right. It's an evergreen for a reason. I especially love the crunchy sound effects, guaranteed to be burned into your memory forever.

A selection of my fav podcasts, although I only listen to episodes of interest to me: - State of the Arc - Games with a philosophical touch - Into the Aether - Games - The AIAS Game Maker's Notebook - Gamedev - Two's Complement - Programming - My Perfect Console - Games - Wookash - Programming

We all like to call ourselves perfectionists. However, I consider it a bad trait. It shows that you care, but time to create approaches infinity. Because you won't need to prioritize you won't reflect on what about your craft actually matters. Consider leaving an edge, it makes your craft special.

If you stream your game's development, working on the game is your channel's content. After aquiring enough regular viewers some people seemingly decided to never finish their game to keep the content going and just became YouTubers instead.

Showed and demoed Owlet's Embrace in Hamburg. Had a lot of fun watching other people play the game and chat about their experience, a really eye-opening perspective shift.

Got hit by an idea for a graph-based level logic flow software. You could assign keys to nodes and (complex) conditions to edges. You would be able to logically and visually step through the world, and the program would derive all kinds of metrics for for any given state. This gotta exist already?

Metrics the program could automatically calculate: - errors, like for the state shown on the right - the critical path through the game - how "open" a game is by the number of new edges at any point, over time as a graph - density of rewards over time Theorycrafting a game's level flow logic.

Equally excited and TERRIFIED to finally do this. Games journalism is in a rough state, so we've decided to get involved to highlight games that we think pave a positive future for the industry. And we named the outlet the best/dumbest thing possible. welcome to noclip_2

And... they’ve done it again. Setting a price lower than most titles of comparable quality, complexity, and scope. While it’s certainly generous for players, which is honestly nice, it also raises the bar in a way that can be truly challenging for other indie devs to match.

Exclusively working with 1-bit pixel art for over two years now. The duality of black and white is fascinating: the lack of color makes it seem a bit dull at first but at the same time it's a neutral canvas for your mind to interpret and fill in the gaps i.e. color, tone and emotions.

Embracing my inner nerd and going for a Thinkpad T/X 2-in-1 as my new portable machine. Read great things about the durability/repairability of these models which became important to me after the poor quality of MS - keyboard and pen died after 2, battery and thus full device died after 3.5 years.

The thin flip cover's connection already is prone to failure after a good amount of use. The pen is charged 24/7 if stored inside the device so its battery will give up faster (better store it externally). You can't change the device's battery because everything is glued up. Expensive lesson...

I'm going to present my current Playdate-project next Monday at @indietreff.bsky.social in Hamburg. It's called 🛡️G l o o m G a t e⚔️ and it's an action RPG with reaction based fights, a node based overworld, Souls-Like elements and still looooots of missing features. But I'm getting there😅
