Update, we now have a full run-down of the lore, and it's somehow *even wilder*. TLDR; Umamusume are a demi-human race born from the reincarnated souls of dead racehorses in another world, who are powered and have their very existence sustained by the power of love. What the heck.

So in latest developments over in the Umamusume world, the new scenario has done a full lore-dump and creation myth that establishes Uma/Trainer bonds act as a quasi-mystical trait that brings out their latent power. Yes, Umamusume are literally supercharged with the power of love *in-universe.*
