Looking back at when Brazil and France met in 2004 to celebrate FIFA’s centennial. France played the first half with buttoned-up shirts and a belt. Brazil played with a laced-up collar. What a time!

Imagine your team wins 8-0. Now imagine (some) fans booing after an 8-0 win. Now picture firing the coach after an 8-0 in the middle of the night. No reported scandals to note. That's what Flamengo did to Filipe Luis -- a club legend for winning just about every trophy imaginable. Game's gone

I grew up obsessed with sports uniforms, from the aesthetics, the history, the tiny clues about new uniforms. I still have my Uni-Watch membership card proudly tucked away, complete with my name and number on the 2002 World Cup–winning Brazil template.

Paul Lukas created a place where people like me realized we weren’t alone in this weird and wonderful obsession. Long before jersey culture became mainstream. Massive salute to Paul for an incredible, influential run. Thanks for helping a whole generation of jersey nerds feel seen.

Sports are the best. Cabo Verde has made it to the men's World Cup for the first time in its history. Look at what it means to them

This can be served as a counter argument when it comes to a watered-down World Cup field, but just remember that Cameroon was in this group. They had to overcome the group favorites to finish first. Well deserved for Cabo Verde

One year out from the World Cup on home. When the USMNT kicks off its opening match, is Matt Turner ... A. ... Between the posts (in the XI) B. ... On the bench C. ... Watching from home

"It's so painful what we see in Gaza. It hurts me all over my body. And let me be clear, it's not about ideology. It's not about I'm right or I'm wrong. Come on. It's just about the love of life, the care of your neighbour" - Pep Guardiola

Tite announced Jan. 2022 that he would be leaving his post after the World Cup in Dec., regardless of result Despite the early warning, it’s taken the federation 3 yrs of stumbling around mediocre performances (w/ an abundance of talent) to finally get the guy they always wanted in Carlo Ancelotti

Unprecedented to have a foreign coach in Brazil. It’s history, especially for modern era in Brazilian football. List of foreign-born Seleção coaches: 1925: Ramón Platero, Uruguay 🇺🇾 1944: Joreca, Portugal 🇵🇹 1965: Filpo Nuñez, Argentina 🇦🇷 2025 (coming soon): Carlo Ancelotti 🇮🇹

Fun facts: Platero was the first foreign coach and the first (and only foreigner) to coach Brazil in a major tournament (1925 Copa America). Joreca started his career as a journalist before building up his coaching resume, and was a co-coach for only two friendlies. Filpo was coach for one day.

Might be a long time before the Prem sees another player like Kevin De Bruyne

OptaJoe@optajoe.com

177 - Of players to make 50+ appearances in the Premier League, Kevin De Bruyne has the best minutes per assist ratio in the competition's history (177). Unparalleled.
