Martha Simon was interviewed by none other than Henry David Thoreau in his diaries. She was living in a wigwam at the end of Sconticut Neck and there was a big pile of clam shells outside the house. The Indians of Sakonnet changed their land at Little Compton for 20 acres in Fairhaven.

Martha Simon lived on Sconticut Neck over New Bedford and in Middleboro or Lakeville, MA. She was a descendant of John and William Simon, Indian ministers from Little Compton. The last Indian land was sold at Little Compton and exchanged for land at "Wigwam Road" in Fairhaven, MA.

Just to show you people get Native American history screwed up, this picture is called the Last of the Narragansetts, but Martha Simon, the subject of the picture was a Wampanoag and a descendant of Queen Awashanks and the Indian minister William Simon.

Hepzibah Hemenway, Nipmuck Indian of Worcester, Mass. A noted confectioner of wedding cakes, she married Jeffery Hemenway, a mustee African-Indian. She had eight children with him, her descendants are still around today.

Although she died around 1690, she left five children and two step children, Amos, Simon, Peter, Betty, and Mamanewa, the two step children were named Pope and Peter Quanowin. Her family continued on for at least another 100 years, the last was Peter Barker/Washanks, a Revolutionary War soldier.

Awashanks died around 1690 or so and was buried on the land of one of the Wilburs, distant family of mine. She left her son Mamanewa as Sachem of Sakonnet. Her other son, Peter Awashanks was exiled to the Cape as part of the paranoia of the English.

Awasunks was the half sister or cousin of King Phillip, who went after the English in 1675. Awashanks chose to ally with the Christian/English because of her relationship with Benjamin Church of Little Compton. She probably saved most of her family and tribe that way.

There is no real picture of Awashonks, who died around 1690. She was the Squasunks (woman chief) of the Sakonnet Wampanoag in Little Compton RI. She was of much greater influence I think that people know, her influence extended into RI, and Jamestown originally belonged to her son Simon.

A lot of people are confused about her parentage, when she died she had no children and her niece filled out the death certificate as "John and Mary." I believe her father was really Cesar Babcock, mustee (African/Indian) of Kingston RI and Rev war soldier.

Christiana Babcock, mostly Narragansett Indian, some African American, became a "hair doctoress" in Salem, MA, joining her brother. She became an activist and the wife of one of the first African American fine art painters of note.
