“Cyclists are often perceived as recklessly flaunting road laws. A new study challenges this perception. The study found only 5% of cyclists broke road rules while riding on bike infrastructure versus 66% of motorists who broke rules while driving.” Safe bike infrastructure fuels rule-following.

I am 100x more likely to patronize a new small business with a cheap sign in Comic Sans and menus in Papyrus than one with AI-generated slop graphics. I will actively avoid the latter actually.

Has anyone else noticed that when you tell youtube not to show you most ads, it still makes you finish watching the ad but when if you tell it not to show you an add for progressive politicians or ballot items, it immediately ends the playback of that ad? #election

We're getting into "turn your heater on" and "light the fireplace" season so here's my reminders per both: Check the expiration dates for your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. If they're expired, replace them or have your landlord to it. Have your fireplace checked by a professional

If your landlord replace them I recommend defacing (but not damaging) the case of the unit so it can't be passed off as "new" on another tenant. DO NOT DAMAGE THE UNIT, some have radioactive materials or permanent batteries in them usually. This means you can't just throw them away either

If your unit has a non-replaceable battery and/or a radiation warning on the case, find out what your local gov't policy on hazmat and radioactive waste is. The company that manufactured it may have instructions on how to return radioactive units for proper disposal as well.

@americanfietser.bsky.social et al, Has anyone ever found a proper replacement for the original PUBLIC "Trieste" coffee cup holder? I had one of these on my old bike that was stolen and when I ordered one for the new bike, it was a totally different (and terrible) design! OG only fit one size bar

Quick reminder that the main justification behind California High-Speed Rail is that it's still the cheapest way of addressing the shortage of passenger capacity linking the northern and southern California megaregions. It really is that boring; that's why opponents have to make it a culture war.

This framing is so disingenuous, especially considering how many ppl form opinions on articles based on the headline/title alone. Doing "high-speed rail" (which reminder, Brightline FL is NOT) the way it was done in Florida wouldn't work anywhere else either.

(to be clear, the article itself is actually pretty on-point but my issue is that many people who don't directly care about rail and transit will see this headline, digest its inferred meaning, and never read the article, further exacerbating the problems faced by rail and transit)

Here's my explanation of how my being a car enthusiast does not clash with but rather compliments my also being a stalwart #urbanist, #transit advocate, and #cycling advocate

One big reason that services like @waymo.bsky.social are NOT the climate solution they claim to be is that the one part of the transportation network that they might actually be useful, low-density rural areas, are the places they're least interested in operating.

In cities, the car simply does not pencil out as a major part of the transportation system of the future. There's simply not enough room for them to operate as scale, as anyone who's used to sitting in traffic will have experienced. Cities must emphasize all other modes and restrict cars or die off.

Or you could just ride a bus to BART (or to any other transit agency) and get up to $2.85 deducted from the fare immediately, not a future credit like this is. I’ve been using the free transfers from BART to AC Transit a lot for Transit Month. Those discounts add up!

Yonah Freemark@yonahfreemark.com

Given past experience with Lyft/Uber, I'm skeptical, but Waymo is launching a program in the Bay Area where, if you take a transit trip within 2 hours of your Waymo trip (using the same Visa card), Waymo will give you $2.85 back for additional Waymo trips. So it's an incentive to be multimodal.

Murder has always been legal provided your choice of weapon is a car (i wish i could honestly put "/s" after this)

Sam@samd.bsky.social

It really sucks that killing someone is basically legal in this country if you do it with your car

The ppl caving to this anti-trans hysteria and hate-mongering are sick in the head and have no business being allowed anywhere near a position of power where they can infect our society with even more of their sickness.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Another Iowa Dem releases an ad in response to anti-trans ads against her. "We need to protect kids, and we need common sense rules to keep sports fair for boys and for girls. Parents know what's best for our kids. Washington needs to stay out of it." From Lindsay James, IA-02.

This should've been done years ago. We need a statewide Dept of Rail with the power to act NOW

Californians for Electric Rail@calelectricrail.org

Shocking footage of high tides eroding Metrolink/Surfliner tracks in San Clemente - once again shutting down CA's 2 largest cities' only rail connection. Imagine if this happened to a highway? CA needs to move the tracks off the beach ASAP, but we don't even have a plan. youtube.com/shorts/wOoWR...

Doug Ford knew that banning speed cameras in Ontario would cost lives. He did it anyway. He also knows that banning and removing protected bike-lanes in Ontario will cost lives. He did it anyway. Every resulting life stupidly cut short is on him.

Toronto Star@thestar.com

The family of a teenager injured by a car outside his Toronto school is suing, alleging the removal of a nearby speed camera contributed to the crash. According to the statement of claim, the 15-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures and ongoing cognitive effects.

Just saw a shady ad from the California Retailer's Association pleading for consumers to oppose AB2564 on the grounds it'll "stop retailers from offering you coupons and discounts" What does it actually do? It bans surveillance pricing. You can and should google every bill you get an ad about

Sometimes I wonder what the distribution of motivation is for the criminal acts of theft/self-enrichment of this administration: how much is just boring old greed and how much is knowing they will need to pay private armies to protect them and their families for generations given how hated they are.

I was at a community org meeting last night where a city employee gave a great presentation but fellow civil servants and planners/consultants, I beg of you, do not call things "AI" unless you know for a fact they are. Speed and Red Light camera enforcement predates the current AI craze by decades.

We can verify the daily physical status of a specific Seattle raccoon but apparently we're completely unable to determine whether a United States Senator is alive or dead.

Podcasters, I beg of you, BALANCE YOUR AUDIO FEEDS. There are two new podcasts that I love but which have one host always very loud and the other very quiet such that I'm riding the volume knob constantly to keep myself from missing anything or going deaf.

In the Netherlands, you will often see paths such as this one. Separated, wide, and surrounded by greenery. By making cycling infrastructure safe and enjoyable, it is less of a hurdle to travel by bike.

Message to younger self: Never try and fake familiarity with or knowledge of something in order to impress a guy. Just be honest, listen to their interests, and show them the version of yourself that YOU are happiest being.
