It's not going to happen, but Trinity Rodman should be NWSL MVP this year. And that's before we get into whether she's the best defensive forward in the league, or just top 3.

No changes at the half certainly is a choice.

In 2023, the USWNT had a midfield problem that bled into all three parts of the field, but had the defense to stay in games. This midfield has the same problem (Heaps is a disaster imo) but the defense is also a hot mess.

Wow that is terribly defending. Heaps gets lazy so Davidson has to run out way too late, Wesley keeps everyone onside but doesn’t get the ball. Brutal box defending.

That’s an MVP defensive play from Rodman. No one else on the conversation is as good a 2-way player, not even the defenders in the mix.

I will also say I do not think Ngock is ready for these moments. She’s not winning balls, she’s slow to mark, and she’s a turnover machine in the final third. A significant downgrade from Hal in the last 20 minutes.

On balance I will take this improvement but wow does this team also have to get back to figuring out how to win games late

This Spirit team seems to know how to win ugly in ways that previous iterations weren’t always up for. Not sure what if anything they’ll have left in the tank Sunday but a tough 3pts on the road vs. a top-4 team is a great result.

Ely Tse is overmatched right now. It’s going to happen to a player still adjusting to the league (and she’s been good on balance since joining the team) but I don’t think the Spirit can go 90 mins without that matchup costing them.

We always talk about how refs (esp NWSL) need to get control of physical games. This ref is doing a good job, doled out 5 cards in the first half, and the game still feels like it’s on a knife’s edge physically.

For the Spirit, that’s only a good point because they trailed 2-0, but the second half was everything they’ve been missing: a willingness to shoot, better service in the box, and a sneaky great save from Sandy on Sears near post. I don’t really understand the substitution pattern but that’s ok too!

Not great, Bob. I’m not worried about the offense, there were plenty of chances, but the howler from Sandy and the absolute L that Rudd took on that 1v1 with Sears means that all 3 goals against this year have just been too easy.

That’s a disappointing result for Spirit, but it’s really just a typical early season, not on the same page yet performance. It is not an “OMG we’re lost without Croix!!!!!” performance. She’s a wonderful player but she had 5 goal contributions last year for a team that scored 41 times.
