I'm really excited to share a first look at my new FP language, Medaka. I've been working really hard on it for the past few months and, while it's still experimental, I think it's finally ready to show people on here. The language itself is like a blend of Haskell and OCaml. Enjoy! medaka-lang.dev

medaka-lang.devMedakaMedaka is a practical functional language with static types, interfaces, and effects. Try it in your browser: the compiler runs client-side as WebAssembly.

openai should invite nathan fielder and a camera crew to live in their office and document everything they do

cooked up a set of fun animation demos on the medaka playground. play around with them live in the browser!

we've been working hard on a big refactor of the typechecker, but in the meantime we've added some animation demos to the language playground. enjoy your spinning cubes and bouncing balls! medaka-lang.dev#example=cube

i did my undergrad in linguistics with a focus on NLP and computational linguistics and I have to imagine that basically everything I learned is now totally obsolete lol

i remember in our classes human-level machine translation was treated as basically this impossible-to-achieve Holy Grail of the field and now it just exists

Millennials who grew up with the Great Recession as young adults are especially vulnerable to Big Short Brain. It does make sense because your brain is trying to make sense of this really traumatic thing that happened to you and it's comforting to believe that you can see the next one coming.

The only things I have mild Big Short Brain about are that the auto market is absolutely teetering on the edge right now and that whenever the next recession happens it's taking Tesla with it (probably with SpaceX after the inevitable merger).

Big Short Brain is what I'm going to call a certain kind of person who saw The Big Short and thought "I can be the contrarian genius who predicts the next recession. Look at me. I'm Michael Burry."

I really blame The Big Short for popularizing this idea of recessions being something you can predict if you're really smart instead of the story of a couple traders who got lucky with their bets.

Nathan: Do you understand why this is funny? Elizabeth: Because he never finished the point he was making about gang violence? Billy [rewinding the video to its beginning and studying it at 1/4 speed]: THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US THIS

you're not getting paperclipped. you're losing your job because your boss realized he can do your job 50% as well but 90% cheaper with ChatGPT.

I think p(doom) is a silly phrase for an equally silly concept but mine is very low for the sci-fi shit and quite high for labor force and societal upheaval unseen since the industrial revolution.

It is genuinely incredibly cool that we basically have universal translators from Star Trek now.

LLMs are the single greatest language learning tool ever invented and it's not even close

this is uncut gems erasure

A huge pet peeve of mine is that literally the oldest and most basic genre of storytelling, the tragedy, has entirely vanished from mainstream big budget media for inscrutable and baffling reasons. The most recent original example I can think of that isn’t a remake/prequel might be Breaking Bad!

another takeaway from You Can See Everything is that you aren’t being nearly mean enough to people who say they’re “learning” by watching science youtube at 2.5x speed

both the SPD and the KPD were pretty inept in response to Hitler's rise to power and if you think one of them was more responsible it's more about which one you align with ideologically than about the actual historical facts.

it is, quite famously, as a matter of explicit communist policy, the fact that the communist left refused to compromise with the social democrats (look up "social fascism") that allowed the *right* the space to bring hitler into power like this is all just straightforward lies

like I'm a communist and align most closely ideologically with the KPD but I also can recognize that they made a lot of tactical errors and fuckups, which of course led to most of them getting killed.

my personal take is that once the Freikorps put down the Spartacist uprising Germany was already pretty locked in at that point. in the wake of the failed revolution the left never had enough power or influence to really challenge the Nazis.

they were both kind of myopic and self-centered but for somewhat different reasons. also the reality is that it's less about the left letting Hitler take power than it is about the right and center handing him that power.

basically every major political party in Weimar Germany was a fucking mess, which is in large part what made it possible for Hitler to seize power. if you think any of them were doing an okay job that's ideological cope.

heard that Bluesky is going to have a wild looping track (crazier even than Hot Wheels) where you can test out the AT Proto
