New Pinned Message: How! I'm Dave Percival (he/him). I mostly post about TTRPGs like Traveller and Dungeon Crawl Classics, but I also talk about cooking and hockey. Super lefty cishet dude. I block alt-right chuds, AI dweebs, and Pro Genocide scumbags. 🇨🇦

This is something I do as well. I picked it up from another gm, but I feel he flubbed it a little because he rolls behind a screen. In traveller, I'll say "the law level of this planet is 7, so I'll roll 2d6, and on an 8+, you won't get checked at customs" And then roll the dice out in the open

Rise Up (From the Grave) Comus@riseupcomus.bsky.social

A GM habit that I have (that I think is good) is that I'm constantly narrating my thought process to try and make it less opaque to the players. If I can't decide on something through fiat, I'll assign it a chance and say it out loud. "OK, the troll will come back to investigate if I roll a 5-6."

The magic trick, if you can call it that, is that you have a loose plan before the dice hit the table. If the PCs get searched, the officer is amenable to a bribe (with proper play). If they don't, you've got a complication waiting in the wings to make the story interesting.

Finally got around to buying High Guard, the traveller book dedicated to spaceships, and now I want to build, like, a dozen new ships. I want a ship that can sail on water and carry two fighters (the bebop, basically), and a janky far trader with ALL the disadvantages (so it's cheaper)

Also an explorer Scout ship. And I'd like to make a ship for scholars who roll ship as a benefit that costs less than 60 MCr and actually has potential to make income for a group of travellers.

Drawing up ship plans for the PQ-238 Modular Jump Cutter, also known as the "Far Cutter", a 275 ton jump-2 vessel capable of carrying 4 30 ton modules (the third is part of a docked modular cutter, on the upper deck not pictured).

Built by ParaQuine Industries originally in 1088, this design is a reimagined version of the Jump Cutter - with a faster m drive and the ability to make a single jump 2. If one of the modules is dedicated to fuel, the ship can manage a second jump 1, allowing it to explore the Outrim Void.

As the ship originates in Perrior, in the Trojan Reach, a light freight vessel capable of jump 3 (albeit at a slow pace) is an asset. And, with modular cargo modules, a rapid exchange of cargo can be done - often so quickly that the crew has little more than an hour for R&R before leaving station.

Oof. Doing my best to avoid doom scrolling election results. My province might have a conservative government. For the first time in almost a hundred years. This makes me physically ill.

The worst part? Our leftist government called this election early, because they felt they had a chance to win more seats. In short? It shot itself in the foot.

My first five ttrpgs in the order I played them: 1. AD&D (and then BECMI) 2. Star Wars d6 3. Shadowrun 2nd Ed 4. Rifts/Palladium Games 5. Earth dawn I think that's the rough order - there were a lot of other games wed buy and obsess over.

I think Musk should buy and reboot Knight Rider. Not because it'd be good (it wouldn't be), or because I'd watch it (I wouldn't), but it'd potentially eat up so much of his time on something comparatively harmless, and we all want that.

Was gonna make a Halloween d&d adventure where the players explored a haunted beehive... But then I realized I couldn't make it scary. Why? Because everyone likes boo-bees.

Basically, the system has players rolling for hooks, and each player rolls twice. Each time they fail, they get a rumour instead, which could be false.

The thing that keeps me excited about traveller isn't the rules, or even the setting. Both of those are kind of middle of the road. What gets me is the fact that, every month, I get to create a world. And each time, I have to work within constraints given by the setting. It's very rewarding.

Spent the afternoon prepping hooks for my Traveller campaign. They get two shots at learning Hooks (rolling a posted skill check) and if they fail, they get a rumour instead Wrote up a half dozen of each today, and got about a dozen more to go.

I'm trying to balance what sort of adventures these lead to, but since the players pick what hooks to pursue, and the chances of getting them are random, I have no idea what the final balance will be - they might just follow leads against pirates

And it's probably all gonna be a waste, because they already have a hook they're following. But I like the idea of flooding them with options and rumours. Slowly building up a massive library of quest markers. /End

Each hook leads to a different location, some in the same system the PCs are currently in. 25% of the hooks lead to one of the four adventures I have semi prepped (two published, two my own). And some of the hooks lead back to places they've already been.

(my players have this idea that they should only go to New systems; going back the way they came is admitting failure or something. I'm trying to break the habit, but at this point im doing it gently)

The PCs have been working for 5 mths, and they're at a destination spot, so I've written up leisure activities, which unlock a chance at certain hooks Some PCs have access to PC specific ones. Like if my wife's PC chooses to spend the time on a date with an NPC, she gets access to that lead

Setting up my next Traveller system for the PCs to visit, and while I know they'll only be there for a week or so, I want to go overboard a bit and put in some quick vacation packages. It'll be fun to drop a vacation pamphlet on the table.

My nephew has decided that "school" stands for "six creative hours of our lives". I asked him how the boot tastes, and now his grandmother (who works at the school) is mad at me.

Finally getting around to making real thanksgiving dinner. Usually I do a whole thing with turkey and the fixings, but this year I've got a cheap (Canadian!) pot roast on, with onions herbs and tomatoes from my garden - doing a Tuscan thing. Plus potatoes, carrots, bread, gravy, and pickles.

Oh man, the new Arc Raiders update goes HARD. Really digging what they've done. My favorite new thing is the grappling hook. It just lets you... Climb. Slowly. Up or down. It already had stuff that did all this, faster, but there's a certain earthiness I really dig.

Also, they're slowly swapping out the AI voices (trained on voice actors, who consented to it, not gen AI, fwiw) for just regular voice acting, and I'm digging it. The bros getting upset that they did face scans of an actress and now one of the traders is "less hot" makes me happy.

They basically added a whole bunch of stuff, so you have more things to do each run. I still think they need to play with aggression matchmaking. I'm such a nice player that I expect everyone else to be nice too, which takes the edge off. I wish there were more jerks in my lobbies!

If your job is to facilitate hiring, and someone asks for details about a job you're posting, you should probably read the emails you're sent. And instead of saying "we offer some compensation for this course you wanna take", say that, and then give a link or further context!

I swear, the people who have "point of contact for this job listing" in addition to their actual job do so much more work than people whose sole job is to answer emails regarding job queries.

Traveller today was a 3/5 session, but it had one really great part that fired the imagination. The PCs decided to plan their next move at a cafe. So I asked them to design the cafe. We got a menu, and learned that the place served "Coffeee (tm)". It even had a corporate slogan!

"Drinks so rad, you'll need a red!" Which is completely unintelligible for y'all, but if you realize that "reds" are cigarettes that the locals smoke to avoid lethal doses of radiation, makes more sense. Not only did we get a menu, but we also learned what things TASTED like.

For a game called "traveller", the game leans into a corporate monoculture that kind of bugs me. This was a moment where the players fleshed out the world a tiny bit, as a group, and it felt like a more real place. I need to take this experience, learn from it, and do it again.

Was on a coast guard ship today, and hung out in the mess for a bit. They fact that they have a switch 2 and an Xbox doesn't surprise me. That they have a board game library, and the board games are actually pretty cool (they have code names! And Cyclades!) totally did.

We have an election coming up, and our NDP representative posted something defending LGBTQ+ kids against comments made by a conservative. Anyways, some jackass started coming in with his "what is a woman?" BS, and then got all upset when I called him a sealioning dipshit. Good times!

He blocked me after I said that he was on the wrong side of history, and that were it the 60s he'd say blacks are "equal, but different" and segregation was actually good In the 80s, hed say he had gay friends, but AIDS research was too far In the 2000s, "why do they NEED to get married, anyways?"

The sad part is, I creeped his Facebook page, and he's a wealthy white guy with an Asian wife and a young family. And in every photo of his wife, she's absolutely dead in the eyes. Reminded me of Melania Trump. Transphobia, man.
