Klara and the Sun Spoilers! Another one all about family woes, though much less fantastical, it focuses more on those family dynamics, and still lays some good twists of its own, and uses humour as levity with a mix of lighter and darker moments, but this time throw in a touch of religion too.

Double feature movies today. SPOILERS, duh. Let’s start with: Wildwood A spectacular film. One of the best I’ve seen this year, let alone animated, (I need to watch more) It’s a fairy tale in the best sense. Mystical, magical, tragic, yet heartwarming, and in the end, reminiscent of the greats.

Maybe there’s something more to the book (no doubt there is), and I should definitely look out for both this and Wildwood to see how good the novels are. Also, great performances throughout. Maybe Rick was the least convincing, but he’s just an understated guy I think.

Idk. I liked the movie. It’s funny, and sweet, and very charming, though there are moments that happen, and then are sorta forgotten about. Like I don’t think Josie is changed much after her party with the other Lifteds. Nor does anything come of her jealousy after seeing Klara and Rick together.

And while I enjoy Klara’s relationship with the sun, and how she worships it as a god. I don’t think anything is really said of that, nor of what it leads her to do. It feels like there’s missed opportunities with this movie, and it could’ve been great, but ended up as just good.

While a strong movie throughout, I don’t know if the ending is… it’s strange. Maybe it just didn’t land as well for me because it’s so… blasé. But I guess that’s life. Not everything’s going to be a big fireball ending… even with Klara burning down the barn.

Idk, for a story that’s so gutwrenching at times throughout the meat of its middle, and at others quite inspiring and beautiful, it really lacks that powerful punch at the end, because the barn doesn’t feel all that… final? Or… It’s just an empty gesture? Kinda.

Both arcs for Prue and Kurtis are great. At first Kurtis, being brought before the dowager governess Alexandra really reminded me of Edmund and the White Witch from Narnia, and while yeah, Alexandra tries the same schtick in a way, it goes in a totally different direction and works so well.

While Prue’s self discovery, and learning how far one’s willing to go for family, and the pitfalls of that is just handled so brilliantly. I was definitely tearing up in parts, but yeah, you should check this out. There’s too much I can’t say for how good it is you just gotta see it.

I loved the twists, which were laid carefully, but still offered plenty of surprise. That opening is fantastic. It conveys so much in so little time, and really hooks you in. And it doesn’t relent after that. Two hours flew by, and I could’ve watched another two.

I just loved everything with this movie, idk. The world is so interesting, even with the little we get to learn of it, and it’s humour is sprinkled throughout it so thoughtfully. The heavy moments get to feel heavy without being stepped on.

Overall a compelling story that breezes by. Though the contest scene is a little... Idk, doesn't make sense why people are watching and so excited. Imagine getting excited over a sport you'll never really be able to understand or properly follow.

But the twists were good, and George was a strong protagonist with his obsession, determination, drive, and even his sparks of anger. For my first Asimov work, I really enjoyed it.

But that's probably just me feeling a kinship with any group of characters in fiction who are "othered" for their mental abilities. Like the Obernewtyn Chronicles and their Misfits.

Later it becomes rather poignant, and offers a strange dilemma to education. When will we reach the break point of their simply being too much to learn? Will education keep up with the collective knowledge of mankind?

It’s one that starts off strange, almost dystopian, especially with how distant parents seem (a child's education starts at the home, of course, and it's such a time for bonding and nurturing.) I couldn't help but feel as if George and Hali were a representation of autism at the start,

Hi All! It's DD Ward (they/them) It's 2:31pm PST #ScribesUnited How is the day going so far? It's allowed to be rough.

The Keeping Place (Obernewtyn Chronicles 4) SPOILERS We’re riding high again. Back to the greatness of book 2, without even the odd white room syndrome, which yeah, that and the all too rapid pacing seems to have been ironed out since the first two books. Yay. #BookSky

M. P. Seipolt@thataussiebun.bsky.social

Ashling (Obernewtyn Chronicles 3) Maybe my least favourite so far? I think the pacing is the best of the series, and I didn't notice any white room syndrome this time, but it's just... Annoying. So there's some cringey "romance" stuff in this one with Swallow assaulting Elspeth. #BookSky

However, I have high hopes its gonna be handled really well once they actually start swinging their dick around and we get to see how fucked the west coast is. The cells were just a precursor and that’s REALLY fucked cause man was that some grisly stuff.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Holy shit they’re getting BIG though. Also something the paper these editions are printed on being thicker or something? Like this book is thicker than my copy of IT but like… 200 pages shorter or some shit. Strange.

The other two major characters this time around were either missing or in a coma lol. But Miryum has an interesting little mystery. The tidbits we got of Matthew was cool, and even Straaka got a character more than just a dumbass creep! Woo. Had to kill him for it, but oh well.

Everyone treating the church as so harmless and unthreatening is getting old though. Like they’re clearly gonna be the big bad. Why does everyone think they’re defenceless when they’ve clearly been making their strongholds better and have a whole damn island to themselves doing fuck knows what.

Other than that, it’s pretty damn good. We’re setting up a lot of great things, and things are getting paid off well. We’re breadcrumbing the major revelations, and Carmody does a great job of keeping intrigue high without overplaying her hand or underselling things.

The dreamtrail sequences are really fun, especially the climax with finally delving into Dragon’s repressed memory. The important characters are spread around a bit. I think this one was the most Elspeth-centric? Idk, they all are, but usually there’s some side-character focus.

Also the ambush double Cross is just... Carmody blew her load and wanted to make it super despairing and like oh no Elspeth is fucked! She can't do anything... But the MC isn't going to die so of course you had to save her with a bullshit Deus ex machina.

Which is a shame, because if she found a cleaner way to save them from that, or a way that didn’t feel so out of the blue of Swallow just popping up and being like “oh I had a vision” it would’ve been a really good moment, and one that was built to nicely.

First, let’s get my biggest gripe out of the way—Malik is just a shit character. Like his inclusion in the story is just... Bad. Fantasy needs to stop doing "I'll work with the super evil Hitler guy to defeat an even bigger evil" (Wheel of Time with the Seanchan).

Because no. He's legit the most evil character we've seen in the book. KILL HIM. The other rebels don't care about him, not even his own men. One of them will gladly take his place, and will also not be dumb enough to be so openly antagonistic and evil.
