Kids who play outside regularly have better social and emotional skills. Better mental health, not just as children but into adulthood. A good city has kids outside in it. A city with children present is a city that's working.

The distance an eight year old is allowed to roam alone has shrunk from six miles to about 300 yards over four generations. Meanwhile the average child spends around three hours a day on a screen. Some studies put it much higher.

Traffic has grown, and children have been pushed out of public space. A "no ball games" culture treats a kid outside as a problem to manage, not a normal part of a working city.
