There'd be plenty of nerds working out their anger issues through therapeutic flying, if the theory holds.

c0nc0rdance@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social

That's what science says. My own theory is that swans are able to fly with such heavy bodies by channeling their seething rage & hatred at the world into their wings and feet. That's its own kind of magic.

Keeping this for future reference. If we put this in our own brains, will we or our descendants look like Illithids? Maybe I won’t mind so much: A mind(flayer) is a terrible thing to waste.

Shallow-water (but not deep-water) octopuses have mutations producing high-fidelity ribosomes that make a lot fewer protein aggregates of the type involved in Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, ALS & Huntington's Disease. It *may not* be a coincidence that this evolved in large-brained cephalopods.

Makes sense. If this adaptation developed independently, it wouldn't necessarily be positioned in the usual (mammalian) places. That insects have "ears" is amazing. But I am really feeling uncomfortable with where they wound up.

c0nc0rdance@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social

How did bugs lose control of where their ears appear? We think the ancestral insect line had none & these auditory accessories have evolved INDEPENDENTLY 17-24 times to allow insects access to the world of sound: for defense, mating, predation. Out of 30 insect orders, only 9 generally have ears.

The thing about painting in the summer in the 2020s where I live… it can’t be done comfortably. But I ain’t keen on being in a sealed air conditioned room where I get to smell all the solvents and painting media. So the work happens at night. In the heat. The work is crawling like a snail.

You're looking at velvet malachite, Cu2CO3(OH)2. A few warnings: Please resist the urge to touch it to feel how soft it is. Absolutely /do not/ lick it. Keep far away from any Supermen. If a wingéd creature emerges, do not agree to any pacts. Let's talk about the science here.

Let's start with a BIG QUESTION: Why is the ocean salty? The answer, of course: They tried making it *peppery*, but it made all the fish sneeze. Dad jokes aside, what's the answer? To start, the ocean wasn't ALWAYS salty. When it first formed in the Archean, from water vapor, it was freshwater.

Some paintings came back from the framer, but I'll need to find another one. I appreciate the quality and the price tag, but they take an entire month to accomplish an order. Most days I'm fine with that, but I need paintings framed a tad more quickly. I'm already losing sleep just making them.

Dropping by to remind you that if you're in Atlanta this week, you can SAY HI to me IN PERSON! I will be giving out epic hugs & hobbling around on an injured foot! 🤣

I’ve re-learned I don’t do well with praise. Either I believe it and I’m handled, or I doubt it and I’m a fool who didn’t capitalize on an advantage I clearly had. Speaks a lot about my deep distrust of people that I haven’t fully exorcised. And I’m sorry. It’s made me a land mine.

There was a time when I knew myself enough to not let what people say screw with my head. Depends on the people, I suppose. Return to best practices, then: always hold a healthy distrust of the opinions of your Asian parents. And of people with an agenda. This… doesn’t help me much. 😅

This maybe introduces an expensive wrinkle in the plans of folks who intend to clone themselves ad infinitum (on top of the problems of copying adult minds onto a cloned nervous system). Take that, decrepit billionaires.

c0nc0rdance@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social

Cloning in sci fi always promises endless iterations of you, like a Xerox machine for people. But an important aspect of mammalian somatic cell cloning is those adult cells often no longer have the 'consensus genomes' of the fetal cells they came from. Each cell in your body accumulates mutations.

Nothing was working. I froze at fork in the road of carefully taking the junk out of my workspace (will take the rest of my life), attacking another painting while my brain wasn’t braining properly (get nothing done). Attacked a model kit instead. Building, painting in tiny increments.

Think of it as a way to meditate without looking like you’re meditating. If you’re an artist, it’s going to help you map out where everything is s’posed to be on a line or the page. Cursive lets you dash entire sentences quickly (with your pen leaving the paper fewer times). 1/2

A Virginia after-school cursive club went viral. More than two dozen states require cursive in their curriculums. Is it an effective learning tool or just nostalgia? n.pr/3NrfDm0

Cursive is one elegant step behind literal shorthand. As one gets older, the handwriting more closely resembles chicken scrawl. I’ve only my own experience on which to make this claim, but cursive pushes complete chicken-scrawl-ification far into the future. 2/2

In between painting and exercise, I am watching "My Housekeeper Nagisa-San." I can almost swear this woman and I live in the same room, except we never interact because of multiverse shenanigans. It's comforting (and embarrassing) to know I am in a club of people who are... messy. 😂😅

Topical Dad Joke of the Day: The Irish have developed a giant knife for cutting several soda breads at a time. It's a four loaf cleaver. #DJotD

This… is a kit I won’t be able to properly assemble. Turns out some key polycaps are missing. I might need to buy the same kit again. Or build one or more of my other kits and hope that I can use spare polycaps they might have. Oof. Gonna get back to exercise & painting in a bit. Still lots to do.

I'm looking too much at other people who may or may not be looking at me. It's made me quick to anger and it's had me flash back to my call center days. This stress was the reason I quit. One eye on metrics, one eye on customers, and constantly being berated by the simulacra of supervisors... 1/4

...in the battle to untangle the mystery of her unusable credit card. This should be a no-brainer. Check the draft of the complaint, make sure she doesn't say anything she can't take back in case this escalates into litigation. Only, I can't do it when she's constantly asking if it's ready. 3/4

And now there's an entire crowd in my head, all of them simulacra. All of them yelling or pointing and laughing at me about some tangential weakness or failure, on top of mom asking "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" I think I need help. 4/4

Comfort is the silent thief. It doesn't steal your time - it steals your hunger. Beware the #lethargy that feels like peace but tastes like surrender. #vss365

I always did appreciate a red moon, and my sojourns on Krynn only cemented that (It's a D&D thing). I did wonder why they tended to be red when eclipsed by the Earth, but I was just happy to see one when I could. I've maybe seen 2 or so over the years. This post is a treat for me.

c0nc0rdance@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social

As the Moon passes into the Earth's shadow, it still gets light that can pass through the atmosphere. Short wavelength blue light is scattered in all directions, while red light passes more directly through, creating a reddish hue to transmitted light that then reflects off the Moon.
