Hi, friends. Just now I learned what Alt + PageUp and Alt + PageDn do when I'm working with a spreadsheet, and it has changed my life. (That last clause should really be in all caps.)

Dreams and fragments of memory: I had a dream where I was in a specific building of a certain name. It took me a long time to remember, after I woke up, that I once knew someone who lived there, and that I had been in the building. Decades ago.

Most people react to this as if the poll responses demonstrate stupidity or a sense of superiority. I don't think that's so. I would say, whether I want a factory job or not, if 33 percent of Americans think a factory job would be good for them, it might be good if more factory jobs existed.

70% of Americans say more Americans working in factories would be better for America 33% actually say they'd be better off working in a factory

At my high school, in the 1970s, the social studies teacher regularly brought in guests from fringey political movements. Some were there to spread the ideas favored by the John Birch Society. The Birchers were received politely, but were ridiculous, and our teacher never seemed to take their side.

I wonder now if this teacher had any Bircher sympathies, or was on friendly enough terms that he chose to do them the favor of letting them in our classroom. Did their ultra-right ideas take root with any of my classmates? Or, were we actually being inoculated and protected against such extremism?

I'm deleting a post where I just disparaged a public figure whom I often disagree with. The guy is too easy a target, and other than giving me a moment to vent, the post accomplished nothing positive. I don't want to leave it in anybody's face.

The plural of "Kennedy" is not "Kennedy's". At least, not in the English I know. "Kennedys" is commonly used, though I prefer "Kennedies", which follows a general spelling rule.

If you want more daylight in the evenings during spring and summer, start your evenings earlier. Leave the clocks alone; just shift to an earlier schedule for your daytime activities. Daylight saving time is stupid.

The happiest smug moment of my life was when I, a fifty-something guy, listened to a coworker refer to something he was old enough to remember but maybe I wasn't, and I informed him that I was older than him.

First, the United States should acquire the Donbas. Then, Trump can swap it to Denmark for Greenland. Then NATO can build a couple big bases in the new territory of Danish Ukraine.

We should use Standard Time as our official commonly used time in the United States, all year round. Anyone who likes Daylight Saving Time just needs to arrange for seasonal schedule changes for daylight sensitive stuff. Trying to push everyone into an abrupt shift in their sleep cycle is not smart.

Even if people don't know what "subjunctive" means, they use it when they need to. Except at NBC News, where I read about "Donald Trump's insistence that Europe does more to defend itself." That seems to say that he's crediting Europe with doing more, but no, that's not what they mean. 1/2

They mean he's saying that Europe must do more than they have been doing. It's an insistence that Europe do more. "Do", not "does". That's the subjunctive mood. It's part of the English language. 2/2

It can be hard work just to be a nobody. Being somebody is often harder and riskier, but if you're going to have to work at it one way or the other, at least sometimes you should make yourself be somebody.

It says here that women are now breaking the glass ceiling to reach the highest level of subservience.

Trump’s slate of cabinet nominees is packed with loyalists who are ready to carry out his “America First” agenda and dismantle what the president-elect has called “woke” policies. It’s also more diverse — at least along gender lines — than the last time he was in office

I wouldn't say you need to grab torches and pitchforks and march on any billionaires, but you might plan to get to the polls at every opportunity and vote against the billionaires' allies. (To me, that has always meant to vote for Democrats over Republicans.)

You are up to date.
