Now they are doing a deep dive on Carter’s media-named “malaise speech”. Steve Schmidt is talking about what a consequential speech it has turned out to be. But Schmidt mistakenly said the American people did not want to hear the message so the speech was a millstone for Carter. He is wrong.

The public approved so strongly that the speech increased Carter’s approval by 11 points. It was the media that hated the speech and mocked it by giving it the title “malaise” even though Carter never used that word. The media turned it into a millstone which they the hung around Carter’s neck.
