still just so jazzed about this, like seeing such a smooth curve made me think i really messed up my data collection. nothing in nature is that smooth right?? and a star that's so distant having such a dramatic shift in luminance?? but no it's real and i saw it by total accident

so i look at other stars in the same area and saw this Weird Shape, because i didn't realize stars could do that

the previously observed period here is about 8.1 hours. what i saw here is about half of that, which is consistent with one star being behind the other, then having completed half a revolution so the other star is in front. so the time lines up and everything. wild

the problems here, and there are many: i didn't think i'd actually see anything remarkable so i don't have any of the calibration data i'd want. and i never planned on doing photometry so the filters are not what you'd want. and the data processing pipeline is "uh, lol, don't ask"

if this otherwise matches the characteristics of the exoplanet i think i'm looking at.. i guess uh. i will have to make sure i've got my coordinates right, that the paper's coordinates are right, that the annotated image which clearly points to a different star is right or wrong, who to email ...

if i am recognized as an expert, and say "i do not know enough to have an opinion on this at the moment", well, then you can swoop in with claude text and say "well, what about this?" - i don't know! i just said i don't know. doing debate club with me on something i don't know means i lose.

so codegen LLMs /must/ mostly be trained on code that someone actively decided to share, that its authors wished to contribute to the commons! this industry was just recently fretting over how to support the open source projects it relies on, too. now it exploits them

and this isn't about copyright or whatever, just about common human decency between people who Make Things. artists of all stripes seem to understand this pretty intuitively, that you give nods to those you borrow from, because... because that's why we do any of this, to share and inspire
